"Check mail every ??? minutes"
« on: May 23, 2009, 12:53 PM »
One of the really fun things about DC is how we can satisfy our whims! :D

I was surveying my email settings and when I saw the "Check mail every..." setting, I wondered how all the fine folks at DC used it. So, voila!  Here you go!

The poll is "blind" until you cast your vote to keep from being influenced beforehand, but you can change your vote later if you need to.

Enjoy!

I'm not sure. I let Gmail handle it however they want to.

I do not use Gmail, but I suspect it is immediate because as soon as their server sees and processes it for spam, etc. it would be sent to your account.  Unless someone knows better, the checking is moment by moment so you could choose option "1" above if you want to.

Well, sure, when I open up Gmail it immediately checks. But I tend to leave Gmail open all day in a tab, and I'm not sure how often it checks whether or not it needs to refresh itself (AJAX) because of new mail.

My point is that since Gmail has its own mail server I would bet it is interconnected with their other servers.  When a mail hits the Gmail mail server it processes the mail and deposits it in your account.  I can not see any benefit to delaying transferring it to your Inbox except for possible server load needs, but the delay is only seconds I would surmise.

Whether you can see new mail or not probably depends on your browser settings.

Actually, this is all my best guess.  I await correction or confirmation of my conjecture.

nice to know I'm not alone in the 2-5 mins category :D
I have email client minimised to tray but no sound notification - otherwise I'd get nothing done ...

Dunno. As soon as I receive new mail, Miranda notifies me of it. In the case of Yahoo, the system is a bit flaky (so it could notify you the next day), and GMail is supposed to check every 30 minutes.

But Miranda interacts with your POP3 or IMAP account, yes? Then it has to check for mail every "X" minutes :)

Personally, I set TheBat to check every 5 minutes (couldn't remember whether I used 5 or 10 minutes, and noticed I had it set at 3 - decided to bump to 5 to be a bit more polite to the mailservers). Contemplating moving to IMAP-based mail (and perhaps ditching TheBat in favor of the less cluttered ThunderBird), along with MailStore/whatever to index older mails.

I'm in the same boat - had to check what I set my check mail period is and found it to be three minutes. Like f0dder, I changed this to every five minutes (I don't do anything THAT important!).

It would if my college mail account allowed access via one of those two protocols, but it lacks such feature, at least officially. And since that is the sole mail account I use that isn't tied to an IM service, well... :)

I changed to a shorter time - from 15 to 3 mins in case my Brother in NZ sends me a message to "open Skype to chat!"  ;D

I never use this feature. I've never wanted it. When I want my email, I just go get it. That's for personal use.

For work, I'd want to see each email as soon as possible. That way I never get behind.
Handle one email, send/receive, handle those new emails, etc. Again, the check mail feature isn't useful to me.
And if I'm expecting an important email, I just check it more often.

Pretty simple.

Really, I don't see the point unless you want notifications, which I find very distracting & annoying.

If, on the rare occasion my sister in New York invites me to skype with her, she sends me a text message.
If I thought she might send me an email to invite me to video chat, I'd go crazy sitting there hitting refresh every 5 seconds.
That could be all the time. I don't know how you manage like that, CleverCat!

I kind like them since I follow a bunch of forums. If I need to do serious and über-concentrated work (like, being close to a project deadline) I shut down my mail client and instant-messenger stuff though. But for regular work and computer use, I don't get distracted much by IM or mail notifications.

I sell and support software.  Orders and support queries come in by email.  I like to know about them immediately, not just when I remember to check my email.  It's not unusual to receive an order and a "where's my stuff" email within five minutes of each other.

I use Pop peeper which auto checks and pops up a window when there's mail - I don't have to do anything!  :Thmbsup:

Hi SKesselman, We aim to please!.  There is now a "Check manually -or- Do not use" option above to record this preference.

Yeah, I have a few ADHD tendencies, one of them being virtually unable to tolerate things popping up, spinning, blinking, or sounding off. If it's something I can contol (close window), it just feels like a game of whack-a-mole. It drives me batty. I'm about to find out about the new mail in a few minutes, anyway. Even when I was in pc hardware support, not a whole lot's going to change in three minutes. What, is someone going to reach through my monitor and choke me for not answering fast enough?

Forums are a little different. If I were watching one, or some, I'd be hitting the refresh button in all my open windows all day long...

Your poll is only single choice so:

2 * email @ 5  min
1 * email @ 10 min
1 * email @ 15 min
1 * email @ 20 min
1 * email @ 30 min
1 * email @ 45 min
3 * email on IMAP

:)

Gotcha covered.. :Thmbsup:

2 * email @ 5  min  = 10
1 * email @ 10 min = 10
1 * email @ 15 min = 15
1 * email @ 20 min = 20
1 * email @ 30 min = 30
1 * email @ 45 min = 45
3 * email on IMAP = (instantaneous)

TotMins= 130
TotAccts = 10

AvgMins = TotMins / TotAccts

AvgMins = 13

13 Mins = 5th Option ("11 - 20 Mins" in poll)

So, select the 5th option!  :P

hm, IMAP == instant? I thought your client still had to poll the server to check for new mails?

Thanks for the link. :up:  I did not know what it was called, but I did know there was a "push" architecture in IMAP, similar to my Blackberry.

My email client is running the entire time my PC is on. It checks each of my accounts once every minute to see if I have any new mail.

I keep telling myself I am exhibiting patience and restraint with that setting seeing as how my email client allows me to set the frequency down to once per second if I so desired.
