Read/Unread PM Counts
« on: May 22, 2009, 01:37 AM »
At the top of my DC pages I see...

"You have XXX messages.  Give out some credits."

... is it possible to reformat that to...

(Idea 1) "You have XXX Unread and YYY Read messages.  Give out some credits."

... or even a more spartan...

(Idea 2) "You have XXX/YYY messages.  Give out some credits."

I never can remember what my last count was, so I never know when I actually have new ones.  As a result I have to keep deleting them to keep it simple.

It would if it was there, but it isn't. Only the total number of stored personal messages is listed.

Either that or both CodeTRUCKER & I are blind as bats ... 'cause its been bugging me to. :)

When I receive a new message I see that I have a new message and some unread....

"When I receive a new message" being the key phrase ... that's not the slightest bit helpful (at-a-glance) for us forgetful old farts that want to know whats up (at-a-glance) without having to remember if we were assailed with a new message prompt in the recent past.

Doesn't the 'new  message' indicator stay until the message is read?

Well... That's kinda my point ... I Don't Remember. ;)

Too many different forums, with too many different layouts ... So I'd be nice if it just said x of y ...at-a-glance.

There is no difference in the number even after reading the PM.  That is the point.  All Stoic Joker (my comrade in myopia) and I are seeing at the top is the format...

You have 11 message. Give out some credits.
Show unread posts (since last visit).
Show latest topics. Show recent posts (full text).
Show new replies to your posts (unreplied topics).

I have looked over the options for layout, but have not discerned anything useful.

Are we missing something?

That would be a nice edition, take it from:

You have 12 messages. Give out some credits.
Show unread posts (since last visit).
Show latest topics. Show recent posts (full text).
Show new replies to your posts (unreplied topics).

to

You have 12 messages (0 unread). Give out some credits.
Show unread posts (since last visit).
Show latest topics. Show recent posts (full text).
Show new replies to your posts (unreplied topics).

or something like that. Sometimes I will hit the cancel button on a new PM and then forget about it, only to find it days later.

Ok i remember now.. the Unread message count (if there are any) *is* shown up top, but it's above, on the very top where it says Greetings USERNAME.
Check it out next time you have a new message.  It's useful up there because it stays visible even if you have that top area collapsed.

Yes Sir, your "Test PM" showed up and the "Unread" notice worked as advertised!

I am curious what exactly you and Josh are looking at on your screens?  Is yours the same?

we all have same display, it's just that i somehow remembered that the unread count was on same line as total messages count. i knew that what you were asking for was already shown, just misremembered exactly in what form.

but i take it that now that you see this you aren't asking for any new feature?

Looks like Code & I are working in shifts ... I think, in the interest of clarity, it would be nice to have something like the example that wreckedcars gave which is what Code & I were eluding to.

Sure if the other new message notice is there it's reasonably clear, but... if it isn't there it's not really user friendly to have to remember where something isn't. Adding the "You have 12 messages (0 unread)." Simply gives one the reassurance of at-a-glance clarity that there is nothing to do/check/see/respond to.

@Mouser...
@Josh...
@Cranioscopical...
@Stoic Joker....
@wreckedcarzz...

I would appreciate it if each of you would just pop me a couple of test PMs (I will not bother you with any replies unless requested), before I sign-off on Mouser's question.

I have been giving it some more thought, but I need to see the feature again.  If it works out that way I am thinking, *I* would prefer it the way I think I remember seeing yesterday (sorry, memory is a fading commodity :P).  I think I recall the location where the "... and XX new messages." showed up actually served as a better flag than my original request IMHO, but this may not fulfill Stoic Joker and wreckedcarzz's's needs.

I will return to comment further once I get a look-see.

Thanks for the help! :Thmbsup:
