Possible Large Directory Opus Discount
« on: December 15, 2005, 08:34 AM »
I cut this from a GRC newsgroup post this morning.  I'm assuming it's legit.  I know that Directory Opus is as good as it gets.

Directory Opus is *by far* the best file manager I've tried.

It costs about 85 AUD/ $64 / £36 . I paid full price in July 2003,
and (despite being a cheapskate, and despite a similar discount
being available at Xmas 03 <sigh>), haven't regretted it.

But I've received this offer (no good to me ;), which appears to be
a genuine 47% discount (down to 45 AUD / $34 / £19 ).

The only catch seems to be that it expires on January 1st, 2006,
thus effectively reducing the trial period (if you start now) from
60 days to about 15 days.

But if you decide about things quickly, have nothing to do over the
holidays, or have tried and liked it before (but balked at the
price), then this might be of interest :-

,------------

  Dear Directory Opus User,

This message is an early Xmas present from GP Software!

In the past you have downloaded Directory Opus from GP Software
(either to evaluate it, or you have purchased an older version).

We would like to thank you for your past interest in our software by
offering you a discount on the purchase of the latest version of
Directory Opus from the GP Software website!

The Discount Code for this offer is:

  40XMAS2005

This code entitles you to $40 Australian Dollars (approximately $30
US Dollars) off the purchase price of Directory Opus (either 1, 2 or
5 install licences). That brings the cost of a single-install
licence of Directory Opus down to just $45 Australian Dollars (about
  $35 US Dollars)!

This offer is not being made available to the general public - it is
a special one-time "thank you" from GP Software to people who have
taken the time to look at our software in the past.

You can use this code yourself, or give it to a friend to use - or
  both!

Please note however that this code expires on January 1st, 2006.

You can download the latest version (8.2) of Directory Opus, and
purchase it online, from our website at http://www.gpsoft.com.au

Thank you very much again for your past interest in our software!

  Regards,

  Dr. Greg Perry

I just popped back for a brief spell and find a big discount for something I've wanted to buy for ages, but could never quite justify on price grounds.  Not any more.   :D

Thanks mrainey, this was a really nice surprise!

Directory Opus is *by far* the best file manager I've tried.

I'd second that. I also paid full price for a licence, and I've never regretted it. Superb piece of software.

How often do you have to buy upgrades for the program?  I think when it comes to power, usability and support, it is obvious that Directory Opus, Total Commander (my god all the plug-ins out there for this are insane) & [xplorer2] are the best to choose from in this category.

Total Commander - http://www.ghisler.com/
[xplorer2] - http://www.zabkat.com/

Wow, Thanks mrainey!

I finially decided to actually try xplorer2 and DO yesterday. I must say, the $65 price tag really put me off, but $33 I think I could manage. $25 for xplorer2 seems fare too.

On the other hand, I like xplorer2 better so far (but I've barely given DO a chance).
I really like the idea of getting an FTP client at the same time. I guess I'll have to give the DO options a serious look...

One of my favorite features too.  Two mouse clicks and I'm updating my website.

mrainey,
This is a brilliant find....The author nearly never ever puts Directory Opus on sale & when people complain about the high price he usually acts like his program would be a bargain at twice the price.

I'll have to mull this one over. Don't know if I'm going to bite or not, but definitely an excellent discount code.

Doesn't sound like a program I'd be comfortable using, then... arrogant software developers =  >:(

arrogant software developers

 :( :( :(

Each of us is free to try to do it better.  The author isn't holding a gun to our heads.  I can't imagine how much time he and his team have put into Directory Opus.

Strikes me that developers can charge what they like for software - if you don't want to pay for it then don't. Simple really. If no one buys it maybe they will reduce their prices, if people do buy it then obviously they are selling something people want to buy and think is worth the cost. Can't really complain though when they actually do reduce the price !!!

An obvious example of  arrogant software developers: it is interesting that so many computers worldwide still have MS Office installed at high cost when OpenOffice is available for nothing . People are really perverse about this (me included). Presumably, despite all the gripes, MS still has a product people want to buy, or there are some parts to MS Office that aren't included in OpenOffice that people use.

I didn't want to start a war with that remark. I just wanted people to know that the author is a bit full of himself. I used Directory Opus way back when on my Amiga & it was brilliant. He's brilliant, too, actually, but how brilliant he thinks he is is reflected in his product pricing. The price for upgrades is rather steep as well. What you pay now with this 40% off code you will probably pay around the same price when Opus v9 is released.

Everyone will need to decide for themselves if this is a financial road they wish to take.

And f0dder, he's not really arrogant...he's just confident his software is the best in its class and proudly prices it as such. Both guys who run the company are as nice as can be when corresponding with them via email.  I say this because I don't want anyone to misinterpret my remarks above as me thinking he's a pr-ck because he's not.

Bottom line...I like the guys who run the company & I like the software...I just don't like the pricing structure.

Presumably, despite all the gripes, MS still has a product people want to buy, or there are some parts to MS Office that aren't included in OpenOffice that people use.

Ooo feels a lot heavier than msoffice - at least program startup time is insane in comparison (and that is *without* using either products' startup-time accelerator). Also, while it has certainly become better with recent versions, Ooo's support of MS formats still have a few problems with non-trivial documents (yes, proprietary formats etc., but meh.)

I suppose the strong automation support in Office is also important to some people. There's a lot of apps that are just frontends for access (and not even VB frontends, but just an access frontend file thing), and I've seen examples of solutions that rely heavily on excel. God know how many in-house solutions depend on Office...

I quite like Ooo, it's a lot less cluttered than ms-office. But it's larger and slower - this is annoying, but something I can live with for personal use (I don't fire up Office all that often). I really wish I could switch to Ooo at the museum where I do IT administration, but I'm afraid Ooo is not all there yet.

Both guys who run the company are as nice as can be when corresponding with them via email.  I say this because I don't want anyone to misinterpret my remarks above as me thinking he's a pr-ck because he's not.

Okay, at least that's something then :)

I just spent the afternoon working with the latest version of Directory Opus....and by working with I mean I worked it hard. As extremely powerful as it is it just doesn't work the way I work.

I suppose I have the Norton/Total Commander way of doing things ingrained upon my brain.

Welp, I finially got my copy, the discount code is still working (if anyone was wondering). It ended up being 84¢ more than I thought it was going to be (thanks random currancy calculator website (xe.com) and/or paypal).

I've been looking for a decient FTP client, so I can justify this purchase as being worth it as that alone.

After a couple of weeks of registered use I now love Directory Opus more than ever.  I briefly considered listing the reasons but frankly I'd be here all day.  In honesty Dir Opus is a frustratingly complex and confusing product, even with the numerous tutorials and product run-throughs on the web (thinking about it, this and the steep price is why I didn't purchase it in the first place), but trust me, with a little time to learn and a slight determination to nurture and customise it will exceed all expectations.  Is there anything that this doesn't do, or can be made to do with a little effort?  Would you believe me if I told you that it cooked my entire Christmas dinner?  Well it didn't, but next year this may well be a possibility.

For anyone considering a prospective purchase - You still have a few days left!  Use them wisely....  8)

I'm a little po'd that I paid full price for DO a year ago, but I love the program so I guess it's worth it.  It really is the most incredible file manage ever...EVER.  There are a lot of features that you don't even know about.  I'm pretty active on their forum also, I'm always asking stuff about how to do this that.  One of my concerns with DO was trying to get it to function like Total Commander because that's what I used before I knew about DO, so I have a saved layout that imitates Total Commander.  If any of you wants me to show you how to do it, let me know.

I have a quick question: I have a layout that I would like to be opened every time I open DO, no matter if I press WIN+E, double click the desktop, open with the tray icon, or with a shortcut. How do I use the same layout for everything?
