3D Realms closes down - Duke Nukem Forever no more
« on: May 08, 2009, 09:15 AM »
i was waiting for further news to see if this was a hoax by 3DR but it seems like the fat lady has finally sung. 3D Realms has folded due to insufficient funding, placing the future of Duke Nukem Forever in the hands of their publisher, Take-Two. this sequel to wildly popular Duke Nukem 3D was announced in 1997/98 and has had a long journey into vapourware-dom. Hail to the king, baby!

I still don't understand how it could possibly take 12 years to make a game. Or why they didn't come out with other games in the meantime to help with the revenue problem. Bad business plan means you're going out of business.

If they didn't see this coming in the past twelve years, they've had their heads in the sand.

I did.  I wanted it, and I wanted it to be good.  I remember many hours playing single and multi-player.  I wanted that back again.  Oh well.

;D Did you really believe this game would ever find an end?

I hope my 3D-Engine will not be shut down so fast  :D   I´d say: Crush Nukem Forever will appear ... when it´s done! (I hope for a good placement in vapourware)

I remember many hours playing single and multi-player.

So do I, but it hasn't been since the days of Doom and Duke Nukem 3D that I've enjoyed an FPS frag fest on PC.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on Nintendo 64, on the other hand, are a different story. Not since Perfect Dark have I enjoyed an FPS frag fest as much.

Sauerbraten is fun, but most of the fun of it, in my opinion, is with the in-game cooperative map editing, with occasional frag fests now and then to keep things interesting.

if it's of any consolation, Prey was released after 11 years in development and a change in developers - 3D Realms giving it up to Humanhead Studios.

I didn't realize they did Max Payne and Prey.

3D Realms did both - developing and publishing games. Max Payne was developed by Remedy while Prey was their own. speaking of Max Payne, Remedy has the making of another vapourware in Alan Wake.

we know that duke nuken forever will never live up to the expectations (if it is ever released).

i hope that they had the forsight to keep a video diary about it all - it will make an interesting documentary regarding what was really going on - more entertaining than the final game could ever be.

A shame, but I didn't really expect to ever see DNF.

About living up to expectations, well, I wouldn't need it to be an earth-shattering cool new engine... just the same kind of humor and some nice maps would be great. How many times during development did they switch to a new engine?

* f0dder sighs.

I think the gamer needs a dream to see what can be done better or looks better in future gaming. There are only very few top-notch projects with stunning effects and DNF has been one of them (especially after the release of Prey). With DNF a big king has fallen, so we have to take our look somewhere else. I personally can´t await Project Offset  (I think you should see all the trailers and tech-demos to believe - the best things are not visible in screenshots) This game will surely show up with a new quality in realism.

DNF's development timeline could go down as one of the most convoluted as the devs repeatedly can't agree on what to focus on most - gameplay or graphics. what it was most successful in was the transformation from a game in the making to an urban legend, a trailer/teaser can be found here and there.

on the other hand, Valve's HL2 dev team even survived an hacker attack, who then posted the source-code on the web.. not a like-for-like comparison, just to show that all would undergo some kind of problems during development stage.
