Looking for a chm reader
« on: May 04, 2009, 06:47 PM »
Hi

I am looking for an alternative fast hopefully free chm reader. I have tried xchm which is ok but Ms chm reader is faster so it is not that pleasant to use.

Looks like your mind follows mine with few days delay ;)

I was testing couple CHM readers last week and sadly said: only xchm stayed on my disk. It had problems with opening some CHM files but it does not require strange libraries (i.e. full python installation) and works on Windows. Unfortunately, there are only few viewers for Windows only. The rest are those for other operating systems or "multi-platform" which means: install "crap" you don't really need (Python, Java, GTK+, Qt) for anything else.

Well my main problem is reading chm files that are on network., MS chm reader is giving me the crap and not opening them properly. I tried to follow online solutions but none fixed it, maybe because I am on 64bit.

There is something I haven't tried yet:
https://addons.mozil...S/firefox/addon/3235

It might be slow but I wonder how slow with K-Meleon (if works with it at all).

Thanks I will try.

The main reason I want to go with chm reader path rather than FF is ICONS. All the ff icons look same in the task bar so it is hard to distinguish what is what, on the other hand I can spot a chm reader very easily. Considering thay I generally have 30 windows open at least this is a big deal for me.

You've answered while I was editing :)

Try it with K-Meleon. It will have different icon.

I am not sure now but I've thought K-M can handle some of Firefox extensions.

I am late but browsing CodeProject I found this:

It seems to be very nice if .NET is not a problem for you.

Have you tried CHM Register: http://www.vizacc.co...howthread.php?t=2556
Download it here: http://www.vizacc.com/downloads.aspx

It registers your CHM files on a network so MS CHM reader reads it OK
