FastPictureViewer - seriously, it is soooo fast, double-click on an image and bam it's there, left+right clicks do different zooms etc.....

$30 but FREE 'today' only: http://www.giveawayo...m/fastpictureviewer/

It really is FAST

just wanted to say, THANKS for this post! I got this image viewer, and while it's not the end it all ultimate final software for viewing images, it certainly has its place and being a photographer, you can certainly appreciate the emphasis they put on helping the user quickly view and sort large resolution images from a digital camera dump. I'm sure I'll get the different nuances of this program down soon and will never look back at my previous methods of sorting new images from my camera.

I _HIGHLY_ recommend this software to anyone looking for a fast image viewer.

Remember to go into the options as there are some very important ones that are not enabled by default (namely, hardware support and if applicable better downsampling/upsampling quality [only use with hardware support enabled])
I'm the guy you yell at when your DSL goes down...

Just found FastPictureViewer Professional for free at ghacks.net Christmas Giveaway. Still valid for some 13 hours! (And it's available for all this time, no drawing or contest.)

Anyway, I'm not that happy with it--no PSD support, for example. I'll probably stay with the last free version of FastStone MaxView, which is similarly fast, can handle PSD files and has more sophisticated zoom tools.

if you meant IrfanView, the OP wanted something free and could be used at work. :)

I was going to say Irfanview...but that is only free for home use also.

Although it's a different platform, Gwenview used by KDE is highly customizable and does basic editing, EXIF, and file management. Comes free on any KDE-based Linux installation. Of course, the one thing I love is its customizable keyboard shortcuts for every part of the app.

Imagina- Virtual Lightbox deserves a mention as a possible MaxView replacement.  http://www.planetimagina.com:

Imagina is a next-generation image viewer and editing tool. Based around 3D technology, it offers the finest viewing experience yet for Windows-based PCs. Featuring one of the most satisfying and intuitive user interfaces around, we also give you the ability to fix your pictures in all the most common ways you would want, as easily as possible, without ever having to leave the software. But our editing had to be good, really good, as only the very best results will do when it comes to your treasured photographs. Download it now and see for yourself.

It requires that Microsoft DirectX 9.0c and .NET 2.0.50727 or higher be installed on your PC before it can run....Imagina is free software, but software that takes a lot of looking after with non-trivial associated costs. If you would like to donate a little money to keep Imagina up and running for future generations, then please feel free to do so here. With that of course, you will get free automatic updates as the software evolves long into the future. Thanking you kindly.

I tried Imagina and thought its image rendering was fantastic, but I experienced an issue with the full images being misaligned to the right side. Not sure why?--my monitor's native resolution is 1680X1050.

So I uninstalled :( and look forward to the next release.

...FastPictureViewer Professional ...., I'm not that happy with it--no PSD support, for example.

Fast Picture Viewer Professional from Axel Rietschin Software is not the average image viewer for your collection of wallpapers. It is a viewer for .RAW photos directly from your camera. The question (as seen from mr Rietschin's point of view) is not if it supports Photoshop but if it supports your camera. And it probably does:

I have installed the latest version of Imagina to give it another go. It's not as fast as Fast Picture Viewer, but neither is it as heavy as some viewers like Pictomio. Imagina just looks so sweet I *must* keep it (though I haven't set file associations).

Gizmo's now has comments regarding Imagina including...
Quote
...Its absolutely outstanding features have captivated me. User experience is excellent and no other viewer I've seen shows that image quality or that zoom and pan smoothness. Both 2-D and 3-D graphics are amazing and even videos can be watched in this environment (with zooming and panning!)...

Check out Gizmo's informative site for the full comments. No doubt there's room for improvement, but unless you're a professional photographer Imagina at least deserves a look.

-yeah, it really is good looking, and with a very high image quality. I just don't prefer it over IrfanView. Also, I believe it takes quite a lot of memory, if you have a large photo collection. One annoying feature I was unable to have my way, is the duration of the transition between images, full sized - the default is way too slow for my lack of patience.

For speed, Fast Picture Viewer Pro for sure.
For smooth zooming and panning I like Imagina, a bit slow in browsing.

Image Walker is still a contender. And works on W7.
Hasn't been updated for a while but still works.
http://www.imagewalker.com/
Pretty fast in it's own right as well.
