Samorost - beautiful puzzles
« on: December 13, 2005, 01:46 PM »
www.samorost2.com

Others may already know of these beautiful Flash-based puzzles - I found a link to the first one on Downloadsquad.com last week.  They are superb games, with haunting aethereal music, lovely imagery, and fun, unusual twists in the tale.  Highly, highly recommended - I just visited the new site, and was hooked enough to buy the full download, because I really want to support them in their lovely, evocative work.  Enjoy!

Do look at their other inventions, too - there's a really lovely soulfulness and grace to everything they've done.  They seem to be the kind of people I would want as friends!  ;)

Ooooh! OOOOH! There's more games by them!

I played samorost 1 a while ago, and sorta totally forgot about it. Thanks a lot for letting me know that there's a #2 (and even more games) :-*

Fascinating - I am not a great games player and quickly gave up on the puzzles here but it really is a nice showcase of what Flash can do!

i have to say it was quite enjoyable all the way through.

on the site there is also a simpler, much shorter game in the same spirit but with music throughout, and you might want to try that one, its the "quest for the rest" one: http://analogik.com/multimedia_quest.asp

Great!  Glad you liked it as much as I did, Mouser!  I'm really stuck on one of the puzzles now - I think it's in chapter 2, so unless you bought the full version, you can't get to it.  A lot to do with whale farts and a sleeping taximan...

i've emailed the authors, and suggested that we loved it so much, i would like to see if they wanted to let us buy 10 full copies of chapter 2 for the price of 5, to give out as gifts.

Is it just me but all of the games are bringing up "Bad Request - Invalid Hostname" in Firefox and "Page cannot be found" in IE???

The main page works, it is just when you link to a particular game.

No, Carol, that's happening for me too.  Started last night.

I finished chapter 2 last night, with a real sense of achievement and pleasure.  Delightful!

I only wish they would allow downloading their other games - I like to work out the puzzles sitting downstairs with my laptop, and there's no internet connection there.  Also, there are a number of beautiful games mentioned in their forums, and likewise I wish I could download those...

for people who are new to adventure games who like samarost and who are looking for a whole new world of enjoyment, try looking at something like "The Longest Journey": http://www.longestjourney.com/
(note you don't play this online, you buy and install)

this is a full complex game, that will take you weeks to finish, but may be more rewarding.

adventure games are starting to die out but for many of us they were the height of enjoyment.

I never really got into Myst - I wonder if I should go back to it?  My adventure gaming days were back when Infocom were making their classic text games...  I spent a generous portion of 1980-1985 on those!

i was not a big fan of myst - it was too sterile for me.
although the mechanics of simple clicks are the same, to me the nice part about samarost2 was the personality and feeling of real creatures.

Try (if you're using Firefox) Free Download Manager + FlashGot on the net-connected box, open the game and "FlashGot All". You should have a .swf file in the list. Download that... TaDa! Off-line flash game!

That seems to work for each part individually, but when you get the end of a sequence it stops working (certainly that's my experience using SWF Opener).  Really I wish there were another way, because this feels a little like sneaking around, since they've not actually made them available for download.  Well, really I just wish they would agree to have their beautiful games available for download...

Thanks for the tip, though, and thanks for your posts on FDM and FlashGot - I've been using both for awhile, but had no idea they were so useful!

Yeah it always seems a little sneaky, but I'm on vveerryy ssllooww dial-up at home, so it's a matter of playing offline at my convenience or not at all. Traffic to their site is probably preferred, but with games/animations I like, I'm usually back at their site anyway to see what's new.

P.S. I didn't post on the FDM+FG thread, as you'll agree they've discussed it pretty well already.

Yes, thanks Mouser. I ask mainly to get feedback in case I've made an error in quoting somehow. It also never hurts to ask.
