software that tracks changes made during install
« on: April 26, 2009, 10:01 PM »
I know this has been discussed before but am too tired to figure out what they call this type of software.  You know the kind that tells you the all the changes made during the install including the registry.

What type of software is this and what do you recommend to use?

I am trying to figure out why our Reader Rabbit Kindergarten (Bounce Down in Balloon Town) isn't working on XP SP3.  I am now reimaging with XP SP2 just to see if that makes a difference.

I have been on the mfg's website but The Learning Company has discontinued sales and support for their products as of Dec 2008.

Any help would be appreciated.

Some choices I read about (never used) a while ago are SystemSherlock and InstallWatch that either take before and after snapshots or give you logs. They don't seem to be very current as far as I know but nevertheless

thanks for the link Chris. Total Uninstall is looking pretty good.  I used one several years ago but cannot for the life of me remember what it was now.

I've been using Neil Rubenking's InCtrl5 for years to track software installations. It's an old PC Magazine utility and used to be free, but now costs, $7.97 (or you can get unlimited PC Mag utilities for free for a year with a $19.97 subscription). It was written for W2K and earlier but works just fine with XP and, from what I understand, with Vista (I don't use Vista, so I can't verify that).

You can still grab it for free: Google

Just extract the executable and you're good to go.

What about Broderbund who seem to be the actual company ?

Reader Rabbit is listed on their Product Support page.
