Top Greasemonkey userscripts that you use
« on: April 24, 2009, 08:36 PM »
after some time using Greasemonkey i was going through installed scripts for i had accumulated quite a number. i want to remove redundant (upgraded to add-ons) and not so frequently used ones.. there are some gems in there like Simplepedia, Twitter results in Google, Text-area Backup and Better (…) series from Lifehacker but i am wondering if there are any special recommendations from fellow DC'ers. so if you had found or wrote a fantastic user script, please share here.. :)

The only one I have used recently and then only on and off is Google Fx, useful for image results not so much for other searches or gmail in my opinion

I don't have that many, and most of the ones I have are to make the new FriendFeed beta more bearable, like adding back the service icons and turning it into a widescreen version that looks a whole lot cleaner.

Other than that kind of stuff, there is these:

TinyURL Decoder - decodes urls from over 100 different shortening services
Download from YouTube - Adds FLV, MP4, 3GP, and 720p download links to YouTube.
ewemoa's date script for DC - to help thwart necro-spamming

For what it's worth:
I use the Google web apps.: Gmail, Calendar and Reader.
To support these, I use the LifeHacker Add-Ons that support them (with some functionality switched off, because I don't want all of it).
I also use related Greasemonkey scripts:
* Google Reader New Style Minimalistic by DemianGod
* Gmail 3.0
* G3P0 Productivity PlugIn
* LabelLinks4Gmail

The latter 3 are pretty novel, and all by the same author, I think, and seem to overload the 2 CPUs (CentrinoDuo) in my Toshiba laptop, causing overheating and the fan to come on a lot (I use SpeedFan). So I enable them on an as-needed basis.

In particular, LabelLinks4Gmail is *absolutely fantastic*, but seems to slow down Gmail response to a crawl whilst overloading the CPUs.

One of the scripts I'm most fond of is one that adds icons to gmail that gives most screen space to the long list of labels I have.

I also use related Greasemonkey scripts:
* Google Reader New Style Minimalistic by DemianGod

That went on to became an add-on. Yet experimental though:

I also love Google Inbox Count Display v2.

Hmm... nobody mentioned the Lifehacker posts yet?

This one is from April 2007: http://lifehacker.co...r-scripts-249957.php
This one is also from April 2007: http://lifehacker.co...greasemonkey-scripts
And this one is from December 2005: http://lifehacker.co...r-scripts-143499.php

Many of the scripts are still useful, though.

Searching through the posts tagged "Greasemonkey" also turns up many useful scripts.
http://lifehacker.com/tag/greasemonkey/

My personal favorite and most useful is YousableTubeFix. http://userscripts.o...g/scripts/show/13333
From the script's page: Removes ads and unwanted sections (configurable), allows downloading and resizing videos, displays all comments on video page, expands the description, can prevent autoplay and autodownload, adds a HD (High Definition) select, etc...

Here are a few of my favorites:
  • Collapsible Amazon - selectivelyget rid of some the vast amount of cross-sell sections that Amazon throws on all its pages
  • Amazon Historical Price Linky - link to a site that shows price change history: are you getting a good deal?
  • Hacker News OnePage - Make the Hacker News site much more user-friendly
  • Remove Facebook Ads - just what it sounds like
  • Facebook Fixer - restructures the FB page to carry a little more info, a little less fluff

I tried that "Autocomplete On" Greasmonkey script you referred to. It works a treat - thankyou for the pointer! Nice find.

For quite a while, I've had two small problems whilst using Firefox - and they're not peculiar to Firefox.

1. Text fields blocked from auto-insert: On some bank logon sites, they disable the ability for a secure password keeper to automatically insert bank ID and password details. So, you have to manually copy and paste the things, every time you login. I find this tedious in the extreme. The "Autocomplete On" Greasmonkey script fixes that, and the problem goes away.

2. Select and Copy is disabled: On some (not many) web sites, the web page disables the user's ability to select and copy text or images on the web page. e.g., at Snopes.com, where, if you look at the source, I think they do this with the JavaScript "function disableselect(e)". I still haven't found a fix for this.

Has anyone else found the same problem or found a fix for problem #2?

Re-enable Text Selection specifically for Snopes.com.
Anti-Disabler (Enable right-click and highlight) for general use.

If you use Friendfeed, you probably know about this already.

One of our newest members, Micah Wittman  is probably best known for his great collection of scripts for Friendfeed, but recently he decided to take one incredibly useful one and branch out and support Twitter, Identi.ca, and Facebook, as well.

Translatorize is both a set of Greasemonkey scripts and bookmarklets that uses Google Translate to automatically translate user submitted content on those 3 social networks to your native language. It is capable of translating multiple languages on a single page, as well as on pages that normally wouldn't be accessible to Google Translate (non-public pages), and it can handle real-time content, too.

With these scripts, if everyone on those 3 networks uses them, we will all pretty much understand what each other is posting. I have seen conversations cross the language barrier in ways I have never seen before. Imagine a conversation between someone typing in Chinese, another typing in Persian, and still another in English, and all 3 people understanding each other, in real-time. I have not only seen it, I have been a part of it, and it's awesome!  ;D

Yes, there are the usual pitfalls that are involved with using Google Translate, as the translations are not always perfect or meaningful, and sometimes it "translates" things that need no translation, and sometimes the translations can be quite amusing, but all in all, this is one incredibly useful set of scripts that is likely to open a whole new world of social networking communication.

EDIT 11-24-2009: added mention of Identi.ca.

My favorites:

GoogleMonkeyR - I used to have several scripts that improved the Google search interface, but this script pretty much covers all their functions - multi-columns, favicons, website screenshots, and more. It makes it so much easier to find what I'm looking for.

Inline MP3 Player - I don't know how useful this is for everyone, but my college posts recordings of lectures online and this script lets me play them directly on the page, rather than having to download them, which is pretty handy. Useful whenever there's a link to an mp3 file on a website that you don't want to download and open in another program.

YouTube Auto Pause - Again, I'm not sure if this script is for everyone, but I think it's a great idea. It basically pauses YouTube videos whenever you focus another tab or window. I just love Greasemonkey scripts that are simple and functional enough that you wonder why the sites didn't have those functions in the first place.

Not really a GreaseMonkey script per se but almost as good:

GreaseFire
When you visit a web page that has compatible user scripts on Userscripts.org, this extension will highlight the Greasemonkey icon in the status bar. Right click the Greasemonkey icon and choose the "X scripts available" item to see and install the scripts available for the current page.

I've picked up some interesting site specific scripts using it.

NOTE: You'll probably need to override compatibility to install in FireFox 3.5+ but it still works.

Looks like Greasefire v1.04 works with Firefox 3.5+ by default. I'm going to give this extension a try.

(Whoa...3MB extension!)

I'm probably still running an old version...time to update I guess.

(Whoa...3MB extension!)

It keeps a local index of all the scripts available on userscripts.org, this gets updated every so often, (can be set in the options).  Saves a lot of traffic when you go to a site.

FYI, websites with ajax autocomplete scripts (like google suggest) conflict with this... they disable autocomplete, this script re-enables it, and you get two simultaneous drop-down boxes. I was searching all over the mozilla forums trying to figure out what bug caused this... and it turned out to be the "Autocomplete On" script. Adding an exception for google took care of it for me.

so, where is the script for updating my scripts?  :tellme:

- without such a script feature, I cannot be too impressed with Greasemonkey itself.
