Network Places Auto-Generated Annoyance
« on: April 19, 2009, 02:01:06 AM »
Hey folks:
I've noticed that in my network places folder Windows decides it should create links for me, disregarding that I have already created my own links and labeled them to my liking. So I searched through settings and found in the control panel under "Folder Settings" a setting titled "Automatically search for network folders and printers". Will unchecking this prevent the auto-generated links? It's a rather small annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless.
Kind Regards,
Daniel in Tulsa

according to MS, it looks like your asumption would be correct.

Quote:  By default, Windows XP monitors shared resources on the network to make it easier to connect to a shared resource. This feature, which is new in Windows XP, is implemented by periodically scanning the computers on the network. During the scan, Windows XP identifies any newly-shared resources, such as a printer that has just gone online as a shared printer, or a folder that has just been shared.
