Keyxoard Layouts
« on: April 04, 2009, 08:44 AM »
After getting an ergonomic keyboard and mouse  :-*, I thought that I'd go the whole hog and retrain my fingers from QWERTY to DVORAK.

I wondered how many others had done something similar?

I used Dvorak for some years, but became frustrated because so many common control key codes are in odd places. then, when I had to alternate between DVORAK and QWERTY layouts, I slowed right down. Now I'm back to using a single keyboard, I use the Colemak layout, and am very happy with it. It's a l'ot easier to learn if you already touch-type in Qwerty, and the Z,X,C,V keys are in the same place  :) As far as I can tell its just as fast as Dvorak for lengthy text input, and even more comfortable because there is less work for the little fingers!  :-*

Do you use the PKL to map your keys (I mean when you were running two keyboards)?

Yes, unfortunately the second use was at college, where such things are frowned on.  >:(

Thanks for the heads up Jenny: this is my 2nd day cold turkey with Colemak  :D

I was going DVORAK, but the Coleman site is very persuasive, especially the bit about going QWERTY->COLEMAN was easier than QWERTY->DVORAK->COLEMAN

I ordered some inexpensive good quality keyboard stickers from (http://www.4keyboard...d-sticker-p-234.html) and I now have a colemak keyboard. I had a laptop-style keyboard that was loosing its letters so I blackened them out with a marker. Now all I need to do is get up the gumption to start learning to type with it.

Hey that's great to hear!!

I actually found it pretty easy. My main problem was that my fingers habitually went to the wrong keys.

I'm not sure what my speed is up to, as I have not done the tests in a while: but it was no where near as hard as I thought it would be! QWERTY seems very odd to me now, so I think that must mean that the cross-over is complete?

I just realized that that graphic was your keyboard!! Looks great! Well done: I'd be interested to hear how they wear...
