Most Wiki'd Item? HTTP 404
« on: April 04, 2009, 12:12 AM »
You have to be a geek (and easily amused?  ;D ) to find something like this hilarious - Nearly 4 million people Wiki'd "HTTP 404" in the last 30 days.  That's more hits than The Beatles or Watchmen.

Oh that is definitely hilarious, though I certainly fit your "easily amused" and "geek" criteria.

Could you explain anything because I get your sarcasm but have no clue what you are talking about.

Actually wasn't being sarcastic, I do think it's kind of funny that 404 was the most viewed item.

But I'm even more curious that it seemed to spike at the end of the month. I wonder what happened around the 27th and 28th that prompted so much interest. Did a popular site start 404ing?

maybe some botnet or virus or spider that guesses wikipedia pages and it actually means 404 pages were returned?

Perhaps but HTTP 404 is a proper Wikipedia page explaining the error, and a Google for even just 404 turns up that page as 1st result so my instincts are that something on those days prompted alot of people to look up what 404 actually means when seen online.

Lol, somehow I could see a huge group of people all logging onto facebook/myspace at the same time, and they all see 404. "What the heck does that mean?"

...now I'm curious to see what the wiki article says, I have never read it.

This may be a quick starting urban myth but I heard it was in Eastenders - look it up if you're not a Brit - someone called someone else 404, so perhaps all the carrot crunchers were looking it up?
