Cute!  :)

Oh-kay! There's a new one loading everytime - and some of them are not so cute!  :-\

+1 with Nosh

Cute hack. But you might want to reconsider a few of them.

This one:

And especially this one:

aren't gonna win you many fans.

Just a thought. :)

I've blocked it -
not because I saw anything offensive (I can hardly figure out 40hz's screenshots & didnt get to see them) - I just hate frantically moving images ...

it's very cool how you set it up.

but i have to agree with tomos -- it's pretty damn distracting for a forum.. i wonder if we should actually disable the use of animated images for forum avatars.. just too distracting imho.

I'd hate to see some of DoCo's classic animated avatars (app103's busy kitty, nudone's shy little cody, Josh's wretched little gnat-thing, and a few others) disappear completely.

Well, maybe not 'hate' - but I do think I'd miss them.  An occasional (small) surprise on the forum isn't always a bad thing.

But you're right. It can be very distracting if not done right. Maybe you could require moderator approval for an animated avatar - or only allow them at certain times of the year like during the annual fundraiser?

I've been using the forums for a bit now with avatar-displaying off.  If I get curious, I can visit dc using another browser while not logged in :)

I don't know what the potential impact from the perspective of performance might be (nor the work involved to get it working), but each user being able to configure whether they see other users' avatars on a per-user basis seems like another theoretical option -- sort of similar to "Ignore User", but not quite so extreme ;)

Thank you!
That's very civil of you and I appreciate it.
What you did was clever, but a bit distracting in this particular context.

Thanks again
