Stupid Question: File Type Change: Icons
« on: April 02, 2009, 12:23 PM »
I feel stupid asking this, but I just can't figure it out. I just changed the default program for my PDF files from Foxit to Acrobat Reader, but the icons still show up as Foxit. It does open with Acrobat Reader now, but the Foxit icons remain. How do I fix this?
Kind Regards,

Open up a explorer window and then click Extra (or tools or something) - Folder view and head for the tab file types. There you can change all kind of stuff, and the icon.

I don't mean to sound rude, but your instructions are less than clear. I know how to change file types. I'm trying to convey the fact that when I change the file type, the icon does not change with it. I am left with the "generic" file icon.

There is a program called Types:
http://types.sourceforge.net/

It's a file association manager, and it's pretty cool.  Of all the ones I've come across, this one is my favorite, and it's free.  I don't know if it changes icons, but try it...it may.
[edit]  it can definitely change the icon, i see it on the screenshots on the website.
Most every other file association tool I've tried is more hairy or quirky than I cared for.  At one point recently, I really did an intense search for programs like these, and this is the one I settled for.

Did you reboot yet?

Well it looked like it was going to work, but after refreshing several times it still won't show the icon change. I still show the "generic" file icon. The file type I'm trying to change is FLV, if that makes any difference. My other video files, such as MPG, show their respective icons. Ack! I'm frustrated! :)

No, I have not rebooted. Does that make a difference? I'll really feel idiotic if that's the solution. LOL

from my experiences, rebooting always makes a difference for file association icons.

I am, however, having a hard time finding the correct icon for FLV files though. It's nowhere to be seen in the Program Files>Adobe directory. I think it's one of the problems I'm having that is forcing me to reinstall Windows, as I've discussed in another thread.

now, now, don't be ridiculous.  Worst case scenario, just pick any icon you like and use that for the flv icon.  i'm sure if you google for any icon you're looking for, you'll find it rather quickly.  Then, just go into Types and set it up.

PS.  My flv icons are also imageless.  I'll change it tonight.

Sorry I was in a rush.

My OS language is dutch but the texts are more or less the same. When You click a filetype, and click Advanced (shown here as 'Geavanceerd') then you can change the icon (where it says "Ander pictogram")

Ha! I didn't even think to Google for the icon. Yeah, I shouldn't have said that was one of the reasons for reinstalling Windows, but I do need to reinstall it regardless - it's jacked. Thanks!
