Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras 09
« on: March 08, 2009, 04:54 AM »
Hi all.

It's just so rare that something interesting/cool actually happens in .au (other than filtered internet of course) that I think this deserves a post. Last night (March 7th) was the 31st annual Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras parade, attended by hundreds of thousands of gay, straight, bisexual and transsexual party animals. This year's theme was Nation's United, to raise awareness of Gay and Lesbian rights around the world. The parade itself was hosted by Joan Rivers, and included a live performance by Tina Arena, the biggest selling Australian female artist of all time. I'll let the pics and vids tell the rest, enjoy :)

Pics (snitched from the BBC here):

Colorful, eh?The aptly named "Dykes on Bikes".

The "Dancing Cadinals".Nations United.

In the Netherlands we have something called the Gay Parade, where like 1 million people come to see 2000 homosexuals on little boats with almost zero clothing. Not my cup of tea.

No need to use offensive terms.

People's sexuality is their own private choice. I don't really want to be faced with it in public, and it makes absolutely no difference whether we're talking gay or straight people (regular mardi gras makes me sick as well). Stop being such attention whores, dammit! >_<

Ah parades of all kinds are harmless fun :)

Edit: Actually of all people I should know not all parades are harmless. But Mardi Gras surely is :)

I get the message the flag-wavers are trying to send out but I find the pic slightly ironic. Both countries still retain antiquated British laws that make homosexuality illegal. They can be (technically, I've never heard of it actually happening) imprisoned in India and I'm sure things don't get much better in Pakistan where Islamic laws come into play. :)

San Francisco could sure take a lesson from this parade! Great costumes - and well-organized, considering it's a marti-gras parade.
I wish I was having so much fun!! Ugghh SF lacks all the glitz and all the spirit this parade had. So ugly here. Too bad.

Not wanting to start a flame war on a sensitive subject..... just adding one to the anti vote......
Sorry, but we are a Christian society (our laws stem from Christian values) and it does happen to mention something on the subject. And not very supportive....

Whooop, the religion card was played - I sense this thread might have to be closed soon :). Society is ruled by civil law, not by religion (pity on the countries/state that mix the two). What people do at home is their own business, as long as they don't hurt anybody. I just don't necessarily want to look at it or hear about it.
