Nope, didn't have to open my wallet for him. In fact, we got back more than twice as much as we did last year. :)

That's one thing that's always befuddled me... people are happy to get back a lot of money.  It's your own money that you gave the government interest free for a year.  My perfect world is when I'm at $0 owed or returned.

If you can believe it, back in the 70s and 80s if you didn't file a Tax Return and the govt. owed you money(like you left it there for a couple of years) when you did file, they paid it with 5% interest for the extra time they had it.  Of course back then I think savings accounts were paying over 4% interest.  I think some people got wise to it and were just not taking their deduction(claiming 0) and using it like a savings plan.  After a few years the guvmint quit paying the interest.  It's too bad.  In fact I think I still have tax deductions I never got back.  I asked my former employer for the info but I guess they are only required to keep it a certain number of years.  I bet if I owed them money they wouldn't throw away the records.  :)

^ Yep. That.

With one small caveat... You "owe" your extortionist? Oh gee... thanks for not breaking my legs. :P #WhoIsLarkenRose?

There's a couple of very "lateral thinking rational" reasons this could make someone happy.

Let's get the Elephant in the room away first:

Earned Income Credit.

It's the biggest chunk of found-cash anyone's ever gonna get. It's *supposed* to vanish into caring for the kid, but... well ...

But back to "regular savings" refunds. People can sometimes really have trouble making themselves save, and fairly well known cases are when the initial self-savings accounts began so strong for New Years resolutions and even into Easter ... begin to get chipped at for summer! But if it's stuck into withholdings, it's a lot harder for them to get at.

Then the final reason. ... if you have an abusive household situation, if your savings are jammed into withholdings, the abusive half of the family unit can't bully you as easily into giving them up!

Or the very obvious reason... that most people don't realize/think of it.  Occam's razor says that's the more likely reason in most cases.

A funny article about a town that's considering changing it's slogan because people no longer speak their own language sufficiently well enough to understand it.

http://metronews.ca/...pe-and-honey-slogan/

The mayor of a town in northern Saskatchewan sighs at the prospect of having to explain yet again what the community’s slogan really means.

Tisdale has been called the “Land of Rape and Honey” for nearly 60 years and its weathered welcome sign still sports the phrase.

Rape refers to rapeseed, a bright yellow crop that was a precursor to the modern canola and a key agriculture product of the area. But it offends people who think it means sexual assault.

I dunno, I gotta agree with the mayor on this one.

Sometimes language moves in tidal wave shifts, so that you just can't squeak by super-obsolete definitions anymore in the old contexts.

The famous ones are of course "gay" and "gay '90s" (1890's), and "faggot" (pile of wood, and no, not *that* kind of wood!).

And those are even moderately "nice" words nowadays!!

The R-word is way up there for the top 10 list of most super-charged words ever!

So I don't think a head-bang icon is called for this time! Call it a linguistic force of nature. I've never even heard of that ...uh ... seed. Right. It just won't quit!

I'm with Ren on this one...you don't get to change the name of something just because you have decided it hurts you feelings if/when/only because of your desire to take it radically out of context.

Rapeseed - Stupidity should be punished...not rewarded.

If they just changed it to Rapeseed then the people who didn't know any better might look it up on their smartphone while driving instead of facebooking, SMSing, etc and thereby learn something just before they run their car off the road or hit someone.

It would have been funnier if he put on a pair of Frye Boots and stomped it until it died.  "Rebooting" it you might say.  That's the trouble with gun ownership.  The owner is tempted to use the weapon instead of laying the computer on a railroad track like a normal person.  :)

So, this guy just got caught cheating

Once the silly humor threads are over, doesn't the guy now have a counter statement to his former gf?

"Hey jerk, you were cheating on me!"
"Hi babe. You've got an arrest charge of damage to my property!"

They should have a new "Scared Straight" series "Hot Chicks Go To Prison Too."  For some reason hot chicks think they can do anything if they are angry.  They need to be shown Hot Chicks Behind Bars.  Not some old film starring Linda Blair.  But real nitty gritty showing what hot chicks behind bars have to do to get hair conditioner and nail polish.  :)

That might make them think twice before chucking a guy's stuff out the 12th floor window.
