Can a solipsist you have imagined who doesn't believe in you cause you to not exist?

Solipists Unite!.jpg

Quips and Quotes Solipsists Unite!

Would you join the International Society of Solipsists?

Solipsism proposes that your mind is the only one existing, and that everything is a projection of your mind. Nothing exists outside of your mind.

With that laid out, the International Society of Solipsists is currently accepting applications for new members. All interested persons are invited to apply. The Society asks that you please send a brief Vita and three letters of recommendation from yourself.

 Purpose

 * To form a sense of community with other solipsists worldwide
 * To interact intellectually with fellow solipsists on a local, national, and international level
 * To convince others to become solipsists

 Activities

 * Official Anthem: "My Way"
 * Ethics symposium next fall: "The Me Generation"
Followed by a reception in the Hall of Mirrors
 * Spring Seminar: "Minimizing Ontological Commitments

The Society's call to action slogan is, Solipsists of the world, UNITE!
The current membership count is 1.

The Society wants more members. Would you consider joining?

Would you join the International Society of Solipsists?

Etan Kerner writes:

According to a film my wife saw in her philosophy class, Bertrand Russell received a letter from a woman who proclaimed herself a solipsist.

She went on to say that she was surprised that there weren’t more solipsists.

Besides myself (although I consider myself only a part-time solipsist icon_wink.gif), noted SF writer Robert A. Heinlein probably was one – at least he wrote several solipsist stories and even introduced the philosophy of “pantheistic multiperson solipsism” in his magnum opus, The Number of the Beast.

Possibly as a satire of this, Iain M. Banks features a band of solipsists in his Against A Dark Background. Here’s a slightly abridged dialogue between the book’s heroine, Lady Sharrow and the solipsist leader, Elson Roa:

“But if you’re God… why do you need the others?”

…he shrugged. “My apparences? They are the sign that my will is not yet strong enough to support my existence without extraneous help.”

…”What about the others? Do they – the apparences – call themselves God, too?”

“Apparently… um, apart from one, who’s an atheist.”

“Ah-ha”, she said, nodding slowly. “And what does this person call himself?”

“‘Me.'”

“… uh-huh.”

Solipsists of the world, unite!

Could Mouser be a solipsist?

Solipists unite!

Seems like the society would be highly inefficient.  Every person in attendance would have to take attendance even though it would always be 1.  Likewise all matters put to a vote would pass 1 to 0.  That is unless there are procedural rules requiring a quorum.  If the quorum is greater than 1 nothing would ever happen.

The single solipsist in attendance is likely to be a reformed procrastinator.

Not me, although my daughter got one as a gift several years ago. She and a babysitter tried it out the first time, but they weren't happy with the results. That might be due to the fact that we only had compact fluorescent bulbs available in the pantry.

Speaking as a Floridian since 1967... ^That is NOT an exaggeration.

The Florida DMV's motto is: "God cares, so we don't have to".

The character count is all that is added.  Sadly... the rest is genuine...   ;D  ... including my comment.

It's still tough to beat "Up In Smoke" even after all these years.  Guys crossing the border in a van made of pot, searching LA for a bag of weed.  It was pure genius.  :)

Same flick according to my search.  But the better line I thought was when the cop asks Chong for ID and he pukes in Cheech's lap.  The cop asks Cheech who Chong is.  He says "His name is Ralph man."

Check out some of the coolest cold weather phenomena.jpg

Now that's hard water!  They're going to have to be careful using water softener on it because if you get an overdose you turn into a savage blob of protoplasm with no resistance to your hunger for bone.

You've heard "think of the children" but now the DEA wants you to "think of the bunnies!"

Fairbanks said that at some illegal marijuana grow sites he saw "rabbits that had cultivated a taste for the marijuana. ..." He continued: "One of them refused to leave us, and we took all the marijuana around him, but his natural instincts to run were somehow gone."

Possibly the bunny was just waiting for the bong to come back around?   :)
