Nothing. We don't celebrate that "holiday."

We don't celebrate it either - I never liked "artificial" holidays like valentine's or mother's day (i.e. dont do something people get upset, but do something and it is taken as "normal" and not really appreciated. That is the one thing I can blame my mom for, since she was like that for mother's day) .

I think my computer currently has all the stuff I need (within the affordable range - otherwise I would've gone for an ioDrive) so this year, nothing :)

Being serious, I think Valentines Day is a crock of crap, only made to make people spend cash and making single people miserable. I hate that Denmark has pretty much adopted it by now :(

making single people miserable

Well, it's not like single people have no choice in the matter. They can always take the time to go out an fall in love if that's what they want.

Like the I Ching says: It is favorable to have a goal in view. Persistence furthers. No blame.

My girlfriend and I do Valentine's all year long. Why restrict the feeling to one day a year?
(To all the cynics out there: Please feel free to sneer. We don't mind. "Enjoy your day. Enjoy your life." :P)

---

PS: We usually blow off a couple of days from work and go to the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in NYC to check out all the breeds we'd love to own, but never will. That's what we tell people we're 'officially' doing for Valentine's Day. None of our friends or family seem to have a problem with that.

Then you aren't doing the crappy commercial Valentines jig. Bringing back flowers to your dear one after a random day at work means a boatload more than buying a zillion roses and a ton of chocolate on that stupid valentines day.

Yes it does. Always trying to walk in the door with a smile, no matter how bad your day was, helps a lot too. ;)

What Deozaan said. The only day we celebrate is the anniversary of the day we met. We don't do xmas, valentine's, Bastille, Boxer, German Unity Day, Independence, black presidents, or any other holiday. Those are for those fancy government workers and bankers! Otherwise, it's an excuse for corporations like Hallmark to induce guilt that I'm not buying their products based on cultural expectations. Me don't play that.

A random gift, act of kindness, or event, or gesture is more meaningful to us.

I always felt celebratory days were meant to remind us that we're capable of being a lot more than we usually give ourselves permission to be.

This Christmas was the second year in a row my girlfriend and I were both broke to the point of where we couldn't do anything, much less give presents. 2008 was a very bad year for business, so money was tight to begin with. And helping our elderly parents with medical and other expenses chewed up a good chunk of what money we did (and didn't) have.

But. we still managed to celebrate the season, even if it didn't amount to much more than visiting a few friends and sharing some cookies and hot chocolate at home with each other. All in all, it was a very nice holiday season, which we enjoyed without guilt or regrets. And even though we began 2009 with about as little as we had when we were first starting out, it's still a been happy new year for both of us.

Holidays are a state of mind, not a state of grace.

I'm going to just pay her more attention as I don't have a great deal of that there "money" stuff and she knows it. My "Silver surfer" card (not even a Valentines Day one) always makes her smile, no matter how many times I produce it (not Xmas though).

Having said that I always get her something such as a candy bar as I don't have a death wish ;)

Strawberry fields forever, baby! :)

If you're ever in New York City, you can drop by Central Park and see it.

Strawberry Fields

On December 8th, 1980 John Lennon was shot dead as he entered his home at the Dakota Apartment Building at 72nd St. and Central Park West. A long time resident of New York City Mr. Lennon had taken many walks with his wife and young son through the friendly confines of Central Park. Long a favorite son of his adopted city John Lennon wasn’t simply New York’s Beatle, he was, for many, the embodiment of the spirit on which city had been built. One half urbane cynic and one half romantic dreamer, he unabashedly embraced the disparate parts which, as every New Yorker knows, combine to form a uniquely gifted, passionate individual. And city.

On March 26, 1981, the city council adopted legislation introduced by then-council member Henry J. Stern on December 18, 1980, which designated the area, stretching from 71st to 74th streets, as Strawberry Fields. His widow, the artist and performer Yoko Ono, later donated $1 million to the Central Park Conservancy to re-landscape and to maintain the 2.5-acre tear-drop-shaped parcel of park landscape. Designed by landscape architect Bruce Kelly the ground breaking ceremony was in March 21, 1984. The name of the site is taken from the Beatle’s song Strawberry Fields Forever and was also, for John, an evocation of an orphanage in Liverpool by the same name. At the center lies the famous Imagine mosaic, donated by the city of Naples. There is also a bronze plaque that lists the 121 countries endorsing Strawberry Fields as a Garden of Peace.

Strawberry Fields opened on October 9, 1985, John's 45th birthday. Every October 9th since then has seen an all day vigil of people of all ages from around the world; fans of his music and believers in his vision.

Location: West Side between 71st and 74th Streets

Details: Strawberry Fields was dedicated by Mayor Edward I. Koch, October 9, 1985, John Lennon's birthday.

I gave my wife an artfully arranged scented-candle/flower basket.  She loves scented candles.  And I'm taking her to Gatlinburg for a weekend getaway to eat out at some nice restaurants, do some shopping, etc.

I am certain Valentine's Day was invented by a designer of greetings card, or something. I would like to become dictator and forbid such a silly event!

For my wife, I had roses delivered to the house on Thursday, then chocolate covered strawberries followed on Friday- pretty reasonable other than they make you pay for shipping...

I also gave her an outfit and a gift card to the store where the outfit came from on Valentine's.
