Rather useful collection - a mixture of add-ons, shortcuts and fixes:

Some potential/real timesavers there.

Necro Thread Rise!

Today I was back thinking about MindMaps, specifically in relation to web pages. My original idea was hopefully to find something that automatically tracked the pages you visited and made a "mind map" out of them with sister-nodes for the same site, and branches for outbound links.

However, a brief review of the various map programs all seemed you want you to manually structure your tree. So I settled for a FireFox plugin called Session History Tree.

https://addons.mozil...src=api#install-beta

Specifically, under the "Developer Channel" down at the bottom, look for the Beta version.

So while not perfect, it at least gives you a running chain of the pages you visit. It does keep the "alternate pages" but it's not so clear there which ones do. But at least it takes a little strain off remembering where all you went in what chain of logic.

My suggestion is to use it Per Tab when you have a big new branch to follow of stuff to look at.

btw anyone know how to specify an FTP port other than default for SyncPlaces? Right now I'm syncing to local .json file.  But it would be cool to use ftp. I don't see anywhere to put a port number in any of the forms.

Just posted for cross-reference and completeness:
@jity2: just stumbled upon this thread whilst searching DC Forum for references to Yahoo! Pipes.

To get what you want I use an alternative that I always use for sites that do not have an RSS feed but that I want to keep informed by (and no, I don't want email alerts) - it's a nifty Firefox extension called UpdateScanner

EDIT 2014-03-06: Link is now moved to Firefox add-ons: https://addons.mozil...ddon/update-scanner/
I suggest you try it out (assuming that you haven't tried it out already).

Also check: monitor and notify of webpage updates

To my surprise this works:
Simple Google Ads Remover
http://userscripts.o.../scripts/show/162023

but you will need Greasemonkey.

I find Google's search result pages becoming more and more crammed with spammy ads. The ads that are displayed near the top are NOT those that are relevant to my search, but instead they're the ads of those people who PAY Google the biggest sum of money!

I had enough, and Greasemonkey came to the rescue! I'd like to share this script with everyone. It's very simple - hides 4 areas on each search results page:

- hides the top ads block
- hides the right hand side ads column
- hides all DMCA notices
- hides the two rows of useless links at the bottom of page

-Simple Google Ads Remover

@Curt: Good find.  :up:
Those top few ads in Google have long been a nuisance. I once had a script that highlighted those adds (with a red rectangle), but it only worked on google.co.uk (I think, from memory), and ABP can't seem to block just those elements.
I use DuckDuckGo as default tool for searching now (which also collects Google searches), but on the rare occasion that I might want to doublecheck a search on just Google, then I still find those top few ads annoying/distracting, and of no use, so I shall use this script.
Many thanks!

EDIT: Oh! It doesn't seem to work! Doesn't seem to do anything.

I like to view links to documents online via Google Docs Viewer.
Having tried out different scripts, there are two that I have kept and found useful:

The two scripts are not identical, but do overlap in function, so I use them both together. Both scripts work fine in Firefox, and seem to work OK if you leave them both switched ON (Enabled), though when I have done that (i.e, left them both ON) and I view a doc in G.Viewer, I sometimes get an obscure message from Google to the effect that "Sorry, we cannot display that. You have exceeded your bandwidth utilisation..." or something. It might be the document size, but I am unsure what causes this, though by trial-and-error I found that switching off one of the scripts for a while seems to (usually) clear the problem, and I re-enable it later.

I have copied below 3 screenshot clips showing how document links look on the webpage, with:
  • 1. Both scripts OFF.
  • 2. only View etc. ON. (Displays a little Google Viewer icon.)
  • 3. only gPDF ON.
    ___________________
(If you leave both scripts ON, then it looks like the 2nd image - i.e., with the little Google Viewer icon.)

1. Both scripts OFF:

Scripts Greasemonkey Google Docs viewer PDF etc - 01 (all OFF).png

2. only View etc. ON:

Scripts Greasemonkey Google Docs viewer PDF etc - 02 (View etc ON).png

3. only gPDF ON:

Yes, it seems the SourceForge project has been removed - probably to reduce duplication of site maintenance.
I searched and found the link to Firefox add-ons. Is now here: https://addons.mozil...ddon/update-scanner/

I haven't seen ads on Google pages since I started using AdBlock Plus or Edge years ago.

I just tried it again with a new search term, and it works fine! I realise now that I had been running the search with the same term before, and I guess the result was being fetched from local cache, rather than making a fresh search. Oops.   :-[

By the way, the script picks up the settings and doesn't seem to need to be told.

I already was using AdBlock Plus, but thanks to your post, I have now realized it too has "Settings"! Thank you, 4wd. ABP does not per default block Google adverts.

Re: Firefox Extensions: FoxySpider - useful image-finding tool
« Reply #590 on: March 12, 2014, 06:04 AM »
FoxySpider is a FF extension that seems to be angled at porn surfing, but it's a very handy tool if you want to investigate a site and take a look at all its images.
Well worth a look-see: http://www.foxyspider.com/about

As a test, after you have installed it, go to http://www.google.com/intl/en/about/ and right-click on the page and invoke FoxySpider. Interesting result.

It most decidedly does work, and you can crawl any website, gathering specific file types.
For example, from the Mozilla FoxySpider Add-on page:
____________________________
About this Add-on
With FoxySpider you can:
  • Get all photos from an entire website
  • Get all video clips from an entire website
  • Get all audio files from an entire website
  • Well, actually get any file type you want from an entire website
FoxySpider can be used to create a thumbnail gallery containing links to rich media files of any file types you are interested in. It can also crawl deep to any level on a website and display the applicable files it found in the same gallery. FoxySpider is useful for different media content pages (music, video, images, documents), thumbnail gallery post (TGP) sites, podcasts. You can narrow and expand the search to support exactly what you want.
Once the thumbnail gallery is created you can view, download or share (on Facebook and Twitter) every file that was fetched by FoxySpider.

I read about this on firefoxfacts.com today:
(Copied below sans embedded hyperlinks/images.)
Tab Set Saver - Firefox Facts
Have you seen Tab Set Saver? It lets you save a set of tabs into a single HTML file (thumbnails included), and restore one or all of the tabs from this file at a later time.

Here is more information about Tab Set Saver:

Save a set of tabs into a single HTML file (thumbnails included), and restore one or all of the tabs from this file at a later time. Use this for instance to save working sets of tabs when switching between projects, move tabs between browsers, or to temporarily offload tabs to lessen the load on Firefox.

Want to download the Tab Set Saver? Check it out on the Firefox Add-ons website.

That looks pretty good - it saves to HTML file(s) - but for ages now I have been using built-in Firefox "save tabs as MHT archive file". where you just select the tabs from a checklist and they are then saved to a single MHT archive  file or separate MHT archive files (your choice), which can be read/expanded by/into Firefox. It's very fast.

Is this a new thing?  I'm running FF 27.0 and can't find it anywhere.

Oops sorry, more haste less speed. I should have said that the MAFF and MHT (MIME) support is built-in to the Firefox button by the Mozilla Archive Format add-on from mozdev.org:
(Copied below sans embedded hyperlinks/images.)
Mozilla Archive Format

MAFF and MHT support for your browser, and more.

If you saved web pages using Internet Explorer and can't open them with Firefox the Mozilla Archive Format add-on is for you.

If you want to save pages reliably, using a durable and universal file format the Mozilla Archive Format add-on is for you.
(Read more at the link.)
______________________

It's very nifty and useful - for example, as well as being a useful archiving medium, and very fast to open/read in a browser, you can publish a web page saved as an MHT file from within Google Drive.
I wish the Scrapbook add-one could use it.

Thanks. I'll give it a go.  :)

Edit:  Save with Pale Moon and open with Firefox works fine. But I cannot open the file in Opera or Chrome.  But I don't use them often anyway.  :)

Edit2:  The maff format seems to work with every page I've tried except gmail inbox.  None of the links are external to internet.  When you click it's just no response.  So far that's the only dud though.  :)

Edit3:  My bad. I see the generated file has an embedded external link to the source at the top.

news about Video DownloadHelper, but  is it good or bad news  :tellme:

This is probably the last update of Video DownloadHelper from this code base. We are working actively on Video DownloadHelper 5.x, a complete rewrite of our addon which will hold all the features you dreamed of for your video downloader.

I find FF Sync tremendously useful.
The latest version of FF has a new-style Sync, which makes the old one obsolete. To use the new-style Sync, you have to detach from your "old-style" Sync account (if you already have one), and set up a new-style Sync account.

This is how I did it and the information sources I used.
