Anyone using the DuckDuckGo AddOn?  I'm trying it now. Not sure exactly why. I can see adding it to the search engine list. But I'm wondering what the AddOn does for me other than stick a DDG Button on the toolbar?

MilesAhead, I've wondered about this, too.  I already have DDG set as the engine in the Firefox search box, and I just found that if I highlight a word or words and right-click, one of the options is "Search DuckDuckGo for [search term]".  So what more could an add-on provide?  (Indeed, I even checked my add-on list to be sure that the DDG Add-on wasn't already there.)

I just tried the Chrome Duckduckgo addon yesterday - it gives the options to search in Amazon and various other sites and combinations. Haven't tried the FF add-on (have recently started using it as my main search though).

maybe it was made with respect to the saying, "out of sight, out of thought" (or how the English version may go), so a normal entry in the search box only wouldn't make it a forgotten option.

edit:
Regarding the wording "so a normal entry in the search box only wouldn't make it a forgotten option" - well, I am not sure what I said, but I know what I meant. Hope you get it as well ;-)

I just took it out as experiment.  I put keyword 'du' to search in location bar. I have google as default. If I select a word and right click, it offers to search google.  That must go with whatever is the default engine.  The bang syntax seems to work with the 'du' keyword. I really don't know why I'd carry an extension when I can't figure out what it does. :)

Weird. :)

+1 for DuckDuckGo, ten months use and no problems. Easy configuration of Web Of Trust, display location, font family, size, color and help.

Hmm, I was going to give the AddOn another try and I stumbled on this:
https://addons.mozil...on/duck-duck-go-ssl/

It does DuckDuckGo search using SSL

You could just add DDG to your search engines from within the DDG site. No extra add-on needed.

I looked in my AddOns page.  Nothing there for DDG. Must just use that install button to put it in the search engine list. Maybe they figured more people would see it and try it if it was listed as an "AddOn."

There's some "Add to browser" shortcut at the page footer. :)

What's the verdict on Mr Tech? Can it still be used to bypass FF addon version check? So far the only script I've found to change the AddOn maxVersion in install.rdf is a Python. But I'd rather not install ActivePython unless I find more use for py scripts that at present.

I know how to do it manually. Just don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't need to. :)
( Or maybe there's an about:config to disable maxVersion check altogether? )

This is pretty much pointless nowadays that Mozilla automatically bumps compatibility for add-ons.

What's the cut-off version where this happens?

I don't know what that means. What I hate about searching for any Firefox info in particular or mozilla in general, the hits you get on the subject have some small print about 6 paragraphs down that mention a version number. It's usually lower than 4. Super time waster.

Oh well. I guess I'll delay ActivePython install a bit longer. :)

It means: Extensions which are (technically) compatible with new Firefox versions and are submitted to addons.mozilla.org will automatically be "updated", so they are still compatible after a browser update even if they haven't been developed for years. There is (quite) no need to manually bump version numbers anymore.

Unless of course the author doesn't bother to submit it. Like Andy Halford. In which case I added and AddOn that disables the AddOn max version check. It must work because I looked inside it, and it's max is set to 10.xx something or other.

It's just getting to be more and more less and less.

Indeed. So... disabling compat. check in your about:config could be easier.

I dunno'. It's like everything is a separate post. No thread of topic. It's not really worth it to me to log into the issues/bug list over it.  It's very disorganized for such a large project. At the moment stuff seems to work so I ain't gonna' fix it. :)

Don't know if this really does anything. Maybe it's a placebo.  :)

What's the verdict on Mr Tech?
Are there still any users of Mr Tech Toolkit?
I had Mr Tech Toolkit for years, and managed my add-ons through it, but I removed disabled it as it seemed to be not keeping up with the FF updates and started causing FF to crash in peculiar ways. I was sad to see it go.    :(

What must I do to force Firefox / Waterfox to install an addon / extension?
Nightly Tester Tools :: Add-ons for Firefox will force add-on compatibility

btw, anyone who tries firefox to see if they want to keep using it, should not even start to try it until they install Tab Mix Plus.

To me, this 1 extension is the make or break feature of firefox to me.  It turns a browser with poor tab support to one with amazing tab support.  (note: there are a couple other tab extensions for firefox, they may be equally good for all i know, but you NEED one of these otherwise ff sucks, imho).

So if you are a tabbed-browser fan, and have been dissapointed with plain firefox, you need to try tab mix plus, it's just packed with cool options.

Yet another example how I need to be dragged kicking and screeming into the current century.  :)
After coming back to FF from chromium, I got Tab Mix Plus just to solve one problem. But now I find it very convenient, even though I don't save sessions.  I can open links in new tabs to keep my focus on the current page.. then when the clutter builds up, just hit a mouse hotkey to close all but the current tab.  That alone makes it worth using.

As you can see I'm not one to jump on a fad.  I usually get there after things have gone out of style. :)

I cannot believe I haven't already told about my most used extension for Firefox. I guess it is because I see it so often that I forget it is not standard default, and because it is not called an extension, but a user-style. It was even created by our own Supporting Member Winkie:

Cursor Indicator On Link Hover - with large icons - userstyles.org

A cursor indicator. Hovering over hyperlinks will show a different cursor based on the targets file extension.
-Cursor Indicator On Link Hover - with large icons

Edit:
I am using 64-bit Waterfox 16 on 64-bit Windows 7.
Can somebody tell if this user-style works on Windows 8 and Firefox 17, 18,...?
