Firefox Extensions: Your favorite or most useful
« on: December 02, 2005, 12:32 AM »
Hey thanks to Betsy for bringing up firefox extensions.  With the release of Firefox 1.5 Final, I find myself more willing to explore Firefox once again.  Only problem is, we all know it takes at least 10 extensions to achieve the features of an Opera or Maxthon.  Ok, so be it, I'd like to ask everyone of their favorite or most useful/powerful extensions, in an effort to help people like myself become more familiar with what all Firefox can do without having to sift through all 1,000 available extensions.  Thanks for any input and let the fun begin.  Currently the only extensions I have loaded are Roboform Toolbar and Tabbrowser Preferences (but I'm fairly sure there is one or two better options out there for tab control).

I will post some of my most useful extensions later, for now let me just say I'm still looking for an easy extension to save my bookmarks online so I can access them from any PC, where-ever I am.

I tried to use one extension for that once but couldn't get it to work, so hints about these extensions (or easy services without extension) are greatly appreciated.

Please first remember that it might take some time until all extensions will be updated for 1.5 !!!

Here are a few suggestions:

- adblock / adblock plus
- flashblock
- image zoom
- translate

there is only one extension i would consider essential, and that is a TABBED browsing extension; not sure what the best one is currently.

Two new extensions that have improved my experience of FF are: Tab Preview (http://ted.mielczare.../mozilla/tabpreview/), which uses some new rendering techniques of FF 1.5 to give you a small preview of background tabs; and FoXpose uses similar technology to allow you to see all your tabs in one page (like the Mac's Expose feature, or Otaku Software's Topdesk for PC - http://www.otakusoftware.com/)

I use the following extensions:

  • del.icio.us 0.5.9 - del.icio.us is a social bookmarks manager. It allows you to easily add sites you like to your personal collection of links, to categorize those sites with keywords, and to share your collection not only between your own browsers and machines, but also with others.
  • FlashGot 0.5.9.97 - Enables Firefox, Mozilla Suite, Netscape and Thunderbird to handle single and massive ("all" and "selection") downloads using the most popular external download managers for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD (dozens currently supported, see Extension's Home Page for details). FlashGot offers also a Build Gallery functionality which helps to synthetize full media galleries in one page, from serial contents originally scattered on several pages, for easy and fast "download all".
  • ListZilla 0.7 - Outputs an alphabetical list of extensions to a text, vB code, or HTML file. You read such a list right now ;)
  • PDF Download 0.5.1.2 - Allows to choose whether you want to view a PDF file inside the browser (as PDF or HTML) or you want to download it!
  • Plain Text to Link 1.4.2 - Manages highlighted Text with a right click
  • ScrapBook 0.17.0 - This extension helps you to save Web pages and easily manage collections.
  • Screen grab! 0.6 - Takes a screen shot using Java. - Absolute killer extension for WebDevelopers
  • Tabbrowser Preferences 1.2.8.7 - Enhances control over some aspects of tabbed browsing.
  • Viamatic foXpose 0.2 - Click on the icon in the status bar to view all the browser windows with a single click.
  • ViewSourceWith 0.0.7.4 - Show Source in an external editor
  • Web Developer 0.9.4 - Adds a menu and a toolbar with various web developer tools.

Geasemonkey is still missing support for 1.5 beta2 :(

bye bye
Andreas

i think crono's link to Tabbrowser Preferences may be the key extension that i like.
[EDIT: actually it was this one i liked, though it seems to be unrecommended(?): http://piro.sakura.n...nsions/index.html.en]

Here's a full list of my extension (exported using ListZilla - thanks, Crono):

Adblock 0.5.2.039[/color]
AI Roboform Toolbar for Firefox 6.5.2
Colorful Tabs 0.3 - gives indidivual tabs a nice pastel tone, similar to OneNote
FlashGot 0.5.9.98
ListZilla 0.7
Tab Preview 0.3
Tab X 0.9.1 - puts a little 'x' on the right of each tab, to close the tab - I really struggle to use Firefox without this extension now.
Tabbrowser Preferences 1.2.8.7
Translate 0.6.0.8

And one I want back as soon as it's updated to work with 1.5:
EverNote Web Clipper 1.0.0.34 - allows capturing text or entire webpages to EverNote for offline reading.

And not listed here are the three OnFolio tools for capturing pages, adding feeds, and opening OnFolio - this is a really great tool for RSS and online research.

I use too many FireFox extensions to list them all, but I'll try to mention the best ones:

TabBrowser Extensions - the tab browsing extension that rules them all. Has everything all the others have and much, much more. Install this one and be amazed.

FlashGot - The best plugin to use with download managers. Period.

Download Statusbar - Sometimes a third-party download manager is not the right tool for the job & this prevents Firefox's built-in Downloads window from popping up all the time.

Findbar Basics - Turns on and off Find with Ctrl+F & some other things.

Flashblock - Keeps flash objects from auto-loading so you get to choose what loads and what doesn't.

Inline Autocomplete - Turns on auto-complete for the address bar so it works like IE's.

Minimize To Tray - Minimizes Firefox to the system tray.

OpenBook - Turns the Add Bookmark dialog into what it should have been from the start.

SearchPluginHacks -  Allows the uninstall of search plugins easily.

SuperDragAndGo - Gives you super drag-n-drop like in Maxthon.

Extended Statusbar - Turns the Firefox status bar into something much more informative.

IE Tabs - Changes the rendering engine for the tab you select to IE.

ContextSearch - Allows the context search function to use any installed search plugin.

FasterFox - Supercharges & fine-tunes your Firefox performance.

mouser,
Used to be a bigger IE fanboy you'd never find. Nowadays though, I am a staunch Firefox supporter. You start out with a basic, very secure browser. Then with the addition of plugins you have the power to make the browser you want. If you want something small, fast and lean or if you want something expansive and full-featured with abilities other browsers cannot touch...either way Firefox can do it.

yep, i really just have to get passed my innertia that has me used to netcaptor..
firefox with good tab extensions seems the way to go, i just have to get myself used to it.

an idea:
should dc sponsor a firefox extension programming contest at some point, offering a prize or something to the best plugin?  there probably arent many coders here yet who are ready to write firefox plugins so we'd want to get out the word to some firefox plugin site about it, but it might be worth a try for fun.  maybe we can come up with some new ideas for plugins that we'd like to see.. maybe betsy's idea in another thread to have a plugin that remembers text size settings on dif pages.. is there a good firefox plugin writers community somewhere?

That's a great idea mouser.  Would be a great way to generate more publicity for the site & it fits right in with what DC is all about.

mouser,
Forget NetCaptor! If you want to stay with an IE-based browser then that's cool. A lot of people prefer the way IE does things, but do yourself a favor...check out Maxthon. It beats Netcaptor on all fronts. Furthermore, Maxthon has plugins like Firefox does so if there's any lack of features out of the box chances are a plugin will take care of it.

And did I mention that unlike NetCaptor Maxthon is free? :)

Adblock (and google for "adblock list" to make it effective)

Fasterfox - speed up your browsing experience by tricks like preloading links before you click them, tweaking memory and disk cache, etc.

Tabbrowser Preferences - for less sucky tabs

Download Manager Tweak - so download window shows as a tab, etc.

Mouse Gestures - because my mouse doesn't have a "forward" button.

ScrapBook - because it's way more handy than "file->save page as".

OpenBook

fodder - get yourself a mouse with back+forward buttons asap - makes all the difference in the world; seriously it makes surfing a lot more fun.

Well, I have a back-button which is enough most of the time, and it doesn't get in my way. Some of the mice I've used when visiting friends and relatives have really pi$$ed me off, too many buttons programmed to do weird things. When I do need "forward", holding down the right mousebutton and moving the mouse right is easy enough :)

My current mouse (logitech mx300) is wearing out, though... sucks that the majority of non-crap mice around today seem to be very fancy-pants, I want something simpler (being left-handed and all).

Four Firefox extensions I can't live without

AdBlock - to control Ads
FlashBlock - to control Flash
NoScript - to control which pages can use Java
NukeAnything - to select and temporarily remove text or pictures or whatever from webpage before taking a screenshot.  (Not ready for Firefox 1.5 yet; I miss it badly.)
RIP (Remove It Permanently) is somewhat similar but permanent.
Was also using MenuEditor (to tame context menu) and SpoofStick

As mentioned, the Tabbrowser Extensions are buggy, bloated, and "unrecommended" by their author - but I love 'em!
