RealPlayer or RealAlternative?
« on: November 30, 2005, 04:14 PM »
I've found it annoying that RealPlayer is on my system with no apparent way to uninstall it.  I've seen claims that RealAlternative is better, but don't really know how to compare them if I can't even remove RealPlayer from my PC.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Tim

RealPlayer works fine in every situation I've tried it, and it's much lighter on resources.  You can also get older versions of RealPlayer, before it became so bloated - I know the BBC has links to it, I think from their Listen Again pages.  As to getting rid of RealPlayer, I always use My Uninstaller, which seems to find things that are missed by the Windows Add/Remove programs - maybe give it a try: http://www.nirsoft.n.../utils/myuninst.html

I know how you feel, I uninstalled that and QuickTime and am a happy user of Real Alternative and QuickTime Alternative - since months!

RealPlayer is very well behaved on my system, once you configure it properly.
if you listen often to live streams and stuff i would think twice about replacing it with the real alternative stuff.

Maybe I should have finished off by saying that I now use RealPlayer again...  and Quicktime instead of Quicktime Alternative - with QT it was because you can't have iTunes without QT (), and RealPlayer because - if I remember correctly - I did encounter a file RealAlternative couldn't work with.  And yes, as Mouser says, so long as it's configured properly, it's not a problem.

Maybe I'll just be leaving RealPlayer and QuickTime on my system, then.  Thanks!

I used to hate RealPlayer's "I now own you because you installed me" aditude, to me the later versions are much better. As for quick time, I hate it (how can Apple sleep at night trying to make people buy the pro version so that they can maximize the video?????? "F" that!).
