Best just stick with the usual sources like ars technica etc, anyone can write up an opinion.

W7 seems to be pushing windows live.
Without it you don't get a few things.
Like email or picture program and a couple others .
From what I've seen so far.

Of course there are many other alternatives.
For those who know.
But the average user who does not explore other options,
they will most likely go with windows live.
I'm pretty sure when the full release is out,
that when installing,
the live options will come up for installation.

I saw somewhere, I forget now,
that you can put your whole system in their live service.

the link: http://www.microsoft...t/windows/windows-7/

is currently giving a redirection loop: a->b->a->b...

The nyud.net link keeps redirecting, whereas the direct link works just fine for me - but there's no download link...

EDIT: thanks for that link, cmpm, unfortunately it gives Server Too Busy when trying to download - geez. They should distribute with bittorrent tech :)

Hirudin: nope, cmpm's link got me to a "Welcome to the Windows 7 Beta Customer Preview Program" page with a bunch of text I didn't read, and two dropdown-list + go-buttons for choosing language for downloading x32 and x64 versions. Clicking the go button got me the server too busy error.

Oh cool! I got all the way to the registration page! At some point they even sent me a "confirm this is your address" e-mail.

What I did was logged in over at live.com, because the first time it looked like it was going to hang there.

I actually got a different error the second time I tried, and it actually had the words "productkeys" in it... exciting!
After hitting continue I either get the screenshot I posted above, or this...

Which apparently has some secure and some nonsecure items, it only stays up for a second, at which point it changes to this...

One thing of interest to note is that a 32-bit version of the beta is available. I *thought* that Win7 wasn't going to sihp in a 32-bit flavour (or am I thinking of the next version of Server 2008?).

Well... noon here on the wet coast (ie in the Pacific Time Zone) and no sign of a download link on the Win 7 page... yet!

First I've heard of it... midnight last night was posted in quite a few places yesterday (erroneously it turns out, obviously).

Come back the afternoon of January 9

is pretty vague... I had *hoped* it meant 12 pm PST...  :(

Ah yes, you're right I was monitoring that page myself. I was thinking that maybe the beta coming soon notice meant that they were finally ready to start rolling it out...

I hope the 2.5 million copies haven't been downloaded... I doubt that many people got through that server mess.

If they think they're serving 2.5 million ~3gb downloads I hope they're prepared.

*grin*

Again, the silly-heads should use .torrents for distribution. Of course the sheer amount of hits trying to get the .torrent file would be massive as well, but still...

Yeah, bittorrent is the way to go for files like these. Microsoft would have to release some kind of small "ISO checker" program that people could download to verify that the torrent is complete/legitimate after it's finished downloading.

Actually, I wish MS would release something like this for all their CDs. I really want a Vista w/ SP1 ISO (since slipstreaming isn't supported any more) but I can't find anyone with a real (pressed) copy and I don't trust non-official torrents for software I've actually paid for.

The page now says:
Thanks for your interest in the Windows 7 Beta. The volume has been phenomenal -- we’re in the process of adding more servers to handle the demand. We’re sorry for the delay and we’ll re-post the Beta as soon as we can ensure a quality download experience.
