I was using IE6 before and switched to firefox because IE6 was not having multiple tabs. But with the release of IE7 I have come back on IE7 again. But I am not sure if installing IE8 is worth because I could not see some major feature in the new release (except private sessions).

Does anyone have idea of some useful features which comes with IE8? And is it safe enough to use it?

Why go from FireFox to IE? O_o

Anyway, if you're on Vista and you're smart enough to keep UAC turned on, IE8 adds a sandbox mode that should make browsing the web safer. I still don't see why anybody sensible would use IE instead of FF3, though.

FWIW, sadly, there's at least one country where so many of the sites use ActiveX-based things that FF-only use isn't really practical.

Thankfully I am smart enough to use UAC.

I still did not get if you are saying the IE8 is good?

Or you are saying that it's not

are you wondering if it's better than IE7 or than FF3 ?

f0dder is definitely saying he thinks FF3 better, but also sounds like he's saying IE8 better than IE7

Why not use one of the FF3 add-ons that adds IE rendering support to individual FF tabs?

Example: IE Tab

EDIT: clarity... I hope! And spelling  :-[

It is better than IE7, that's for sure, just tab isolation (to prevent program crashes, just like Chrome) and all the improvements in the rendering engine would be more than enough to go ahead and upgrade to it, but still being in testing, and with all the compatibility problems it has with many pages, I suggest you stay with IE7 for the time being.

Why go from FireFox to IE? O_o

Why not, it's not the popular thing to do :P

Example: IE Tab
Good plug in, but why would anyone use this IEtab plugin on FF (other then web developers)?

For those very few sites that don't work in FF, I guess... personally I find it pointless, and just fire up an instance of IE instead. If an IE tab in FF crashes, doesn't it bring down the entire FF process?

Good point… I have faced it so many time when IE crashes (don’t know the reason) and all the TABS are closed…

Indeed! Try opening the Win 7 site in Firefox 3 - crashes it each and every time. If I open it in an IETab, all is well...

Weird, it loads just fine here with FF3 and a bunch of plugins :)

You could try Sleipnir, which allows you to use both IE's Trident engine and Gecko (which is what Firefox uses), switching between them by just clicking the little icon in the statusbar.

SNAG-00030.png SNAG-00031.png

You can choose a default engine (I would choose Gecko) and if you have any issues with a particular page, just click that icon to switch when you need it. It only switches the engine for that tab

While in Trident mode, it will use the engine of whatever version of IE you happen to have installed. (IE 5+)

The Gecko engine isn't installed by default and on some system configurations (like mine) it can be a bit tricky to install. They offer the Gecko installer separately for the portable version, but you will not be able to install it and still keep Sleipnir completely portable.

I ran into some issues because I have K-Meleon installed on my system, too. I had to get my hands dirty, running process monitor to find out why the install was failing, and then editing the registry to get it to work.

Be warned: tech support is offered through their forum, English is not their first language, and they assume you are an experienced knowledgeable Windows power user. They don't hold your hand and walk you through fixing issues and will only hint at where you should look and what to do.

IE8 seems to update the core rendering components used by other applications. Shouldn't this be a good enough reason to upgrade?

Yes and no. While it surely be damn useful for certain applications, waiting some time to upgrade while those apps fix possible issues with IE8 is also advisable, I think.
