What's the best way to sell old electronics?
« on: December 20, 2008, 11:20 PM »
I'm building a new computer soon and I'm using the opportunity to do a little housecleaning.  What's the best way to get rid of old electronics?  I don't even know if it's worth much at all.  For example, I have two 19" CRT monitors that I'll be getting rid of.  I also have this huge Altec Lansing Speaker/PA system from the 70's.  I have no idea how much it's worth, but it used to be expensive.

I know ebay's a solution, but if it doesn't sell, don't they charge you?  Honestly, I just want to get rid of this stuff.

for big items like monitors you might be better of using something local like craig's list.

If that's the case, you could try FreeCycle, if you're not fussed about getting some money for it.

some local youth club may be able to use the stuff, or some other charity if you are prepared to give it away

Place items into your crusher.
Form output into coin-sized pieces.
Hire Cody to distribute them, starting at 00:01, Dec 25.
(Better hurry!)

Just don't be surprised if they're a little fussy about what they'll take, or simply not interested.

I used to repurpose old client PCs as web browsing and basic office productivity appliances for any charities and groups that wanted them, at no charge. I'd even drop them off and set them up for free.

But the times have changed...

I don't know how it is where you are, but the last few times I approached some of these groups, they declined the equipment -  and then asked if I would be interested in making a financial contribution for them to buy NEW equipment instead.

Apparently when these guys say they're "going green" they mean cash.

It's a shame when that happens.
I wonder if the shaky economy will return us to a place where useful comes above new on our scale of values.

A lot of clubs and charities just do not take them any more, Your best better would be a recycling place. An other Option would be a second store or a church second hand store where you just give them your old stuff, they may take the 19" CRT monitors.

Ha!  That's an easy one:

Hang out a shingle and call yourself "CompUSA".   ;D   ;D   8)
