PC Magazine to go all digital, no more print editions
« on: December 22, 2008, 11:02 PM »
Hello all:
It seems like more and more newspapers and magazines are going out of business, or all digital.  I still love to site down with my morning paper and a cup of coffee.
                                                                                                       Happy Holidays to all.
                                                                                                                                        Stan

We could make a long list of things that soon will not exist anymore because of their production costs (music CDs being one, movie discs being another). But PC Mag was one big ad mag with two horrid Dvorak columns thrown in, and since most of those advertisers' companies don't exist anymore, there's little profit in the whole enterprise.

Look at Apple Computer, er, just 'Apple' now since they don't want to be identified as a computer company anymore, and the money they make off of computers is a distant third to the profit from ipods and iphones (still no redial!). Here's another dinosaur that will have to soon reinvent itself to stay alive: radio, both satellite and terrestrial.

of course you are right, and it's gotten thinner and thinner over the last years.

but still some of us grew up using computers when these big meaty computer magazines were first born, and they were so damn fun to get and read (Byte, Creative Computing, then later PC Magazine).

it's true that PC Magazine was never in the league of byte or creative computing, but at one point it was one of those magazines that personal computer lovers used to just pour over with barely containable excitement.

and it's sad that those days are really gone.

I did read PC Magazine for two years a while ago, until I got too bothered by the nonsense that some of their writers were producing (and I am not even half-informed myself).
Finally they did promote the dumbest of their staff to become chief editor and they even began writing about cars.  I guess, until the editorial policies change dramatically, they will keep shrinking.
The best thing about PC Mag are actually their PC utilities, many original ideas there.

I guess this move to a digital edition will be accompanied by a complete redesign of the PC Magazine site, which has one of the worst layouts I have ever seen (a common trend in Ziff Davis sites). They have a big problem if they intend to lure former "paper readers" to this new format with the article divided in tiny sections that take 1/6 of the entire page at best, and completely surrounded by distracting and not-related content.

But well, if Zaine says that the paper magazine is currently filled with ads, they'll feel at home.

I once had a subscription to the digital edition.

Worst thing I ever tried to live with.

If they do go all-electronic, I hope they use different technology.
