VLC making improvements
« on: December 15, 2008, 09:59:46 AM »
While I still have WMC as my default player,
VLC has improved since it's earlier versions.
I loaded it up but didn't set it to associate with anything.
It works well and seems to have an improved look.
Some things only work on VLC, so I keep it around.

There is one minor annoyance which has annoyed me since V 0.93 on windows. That is the fact that it DOES NOT REMEMBER YOUR LAST USED DIRECTORY OR FOLDER!!!!! This has been reported and is highly annoying. If I have several videos I want to scroll through or open, I have to re-browse to the folder which can get 8-9 deep.

Yeah...
I think you would have to save it as a playlist or something.
Check out the advanced options.
Maybe there is something in there.

btw, if you do set it as the default player and then change to a different player as the default, that darn cone is still the icon for the file unless you uninstall vlc.

I like many of the changes to VLC this fall.

But 0.9.8a has a new bug: the fullscreen view now forces itself onto the primary monitor. It should (as in previous versions) display the fullscreen video on the screen that the minimized VLC window resides in.

Another "bug" or at least annoyance: VLC doesn't remember what installation options the user checked/unchecked during last reinstall. For example, it always defaults to making itself default player for all video file types. It should instead remember whatever choices the user made on last install.

<offtopic rant> I guess that's a problem for installers in general. I bet most programs have, for any new version of the program, more people doing re-installs/upgrades than fresh installs. Still, the installations dialogs often assume that the user installs for the first time. Firefox is even worse in this regard due to add-on upgrade notifications. I go through a 10 second, 3-5 click process on the first firefox startup almost every day. I would love some way to just silently autoinstall all noscript updates for instance...</offtopic rant>

For those who don't about it, Kmplayer (www.kmplayer.com) is an awesome player - its like all the codecs of Vlc/Mpc in a nice UI, with more options to tweak than you want. After I found that I have no need to try anything else.

I'm inclined to agree with MrCrispy, especially with the 0.9x branches of VLC as of late (Windows). The UI is the strong point of VLC when compared to KMPlayer.

Granted, when both pieces of software are showing their initial screen, it is KMPlayer who will win the UI look prize. But after that it is very quickly becoming a mess. VLC is a lot less confusing. KMPlayer has context meny that goes till 4 layers deep. UI-wise that is a major no-no!

That is also the reason why so many people are (still) using VLC. KMPlayer is definitely awesome, but you really have to get accustomed to the interface. Because of that it is my "fall back" or "backup" player.

As far as installing vlc, or most anything, I always do the custom install, just to see what there is in options.
With vlc there is an option to uncheck making it the default player.

As far the KMPlayer. I like it a lot, but I opt for just hitting a song or opening a folder and click play without all the extras. But the extras in Km are nice to play around with. And it will play anything as well I think.

WMC, VLC, and KM play audio and video files fine....so far.
For me, it's the ease of playing songs and sometimes playing around with options, but mostly I just want music.

I'm glad they can all play on the same computer, bypassing quicktime and realplayer and wmp which we were stuck with years ago.

We can even play more then 1 song at once just for fun I reckon.

Ah, I hadn't noticed those two things, but I did notice a difference in the tray icon :)
