Not quite the same but this distro claims to have most Linux games pre-installed.

It doesn't have stuff like WesternQuake but it's a bit more convenient for those who don't really care for games like WoW: http://live.linux-gamers.net/?s=games

Lol, zridling you're certainly in a thankful mood today dude. Anything happened? I saw you also thanked someone in another thread.

Deozaan, they all work in pretty much any Linux distro as far as I know. A few may take some source tinkering like UFO:AI which I didn't find in Synaptic when I was playing with Mint at around Celena time but most of those are like the only games in Linux.

There's stuff like WesternQuake like I said but they are few and far between and these is pretty much "THE" list of Linux games.

I'm sort of disappointed that LinuxMint.com is down again because I thought it's software portal used to have all the rarer games like WesternQuake.

This is just the topic I need

I gave in and ordered an HP 2133 netbook, the one with SUSE linux installed.

Now back when I had my subnotebook I did run old games on it, a good thing to do when stuck on a plane or train - in my case I had fallout, starcraft, disciples, myth, descent, and possibly baldur's gate or icewind dale. All working via a virtual CD (no CD in the machine, plus a CD does use up battery)

Now I plan to stick with SUSE so I am wondering about
- native linux games
- ports to linux (I know there were some eg: Kohan and Myth)
- emulation via wine or other tools

Of course this is a machine with 1Gb of RAM and a very simple onboard graphics chip so it might not do much with 3D - but I'd love some advice, game suggestions, or any experience people have had with these different options

I'm partial to simulation-type games that don't require a 500-page manual. LinCity is a nice native one.

LinCity-NG is a city simulation game. It is a polished and improved version of the classic LinCity game. In the game, you are required to build and maintain a city. You can win the game either by building a sustainable economy or by evacuating all citizens with spaceships.

iphigenie, in general, almost all applications of Linux are either ports or forks of some kind exempting the really advanced user stuff.

For games, I'm very iffy towards using Wine/Cedega because you never know when there would be bugs but for a list of compatible games, you generally just check the Wine site or ask around.

In general, I wouldn't recommend using Wine for games at any cost. It just too risky when you can have Cedega by hook or by cash. http://www.cedega.com/gamesdb/

As far as the non-emulated games for Linux, in general the top tiers are:

LinCity-NG = SimCity clone

FreeCiv - Civilization clone

Tremulous - Sort of like an Alien vs. Predator multiplayer game clone

Enemy Territory - Wolfenstein game but closest thing to a native Counter-Strike clone for Linux

Battle for Wesnoth - Closest thing to an original well-developed "on par with a commercial game" for Linux. Still pretty much a hex-based turn-based strategy clone.

Ufo:AI - X-Com clone

Still...these are native Linux games in the sense that they don't use emulation but they are very much available for Windows.

So you're a Cedega user and it works well? That's good news.

On my little mini note I suspect I will want "slow" older games, and the cedega site seems to cover mostly recent games (it makes sense)

I need games where the power of the graphics card (since this is probably a very challenged graphics chip) doesn't matter, games from 1998-2003 of which I own a whole mountain of.

iphigenie, it depends on what you mean by works well. In this case, yes it works well. The caveat though is that you have no other decent alternative so you really have no other choice if it works not so well. Think of it like the MS Office of Linux except Microsoft share their code to OpenOffice to make it better.

Well Cedega offers support only for a very narrow set of platforms, so I'm not sure it makes a sense to pay for it unless you have the precise hardware?

Don't forget to check out the thread on Kenta Cho's games. I just found some of them and they work on my netbook that is running Ubuntu.
