Gbridge
« on: September 19, 2008, 09:37 PM »
Apparently another google product surfaces.
Haven't tried it yet.
Some comments are interesting from freewaregenius.

http://www.freewareg...s-remote-pcs-easily/

http://www.gbridge.com/

It seems incomplete by the feedback, but I can't be sure.

I thought someone should put this target up!

It could be great or whatever.
Just cautious with this one that is new as well.

I wonder if there is a product that can monitor everything that these things do.
And print out every detail, every move it makes. I'm sure there is...somewhere.
A security product, but not from the same company as the programs monitored.

This thing actually worked on my Palm Treo 800w logging into my Windows Vista machine.  Looks more like and FTP than VPN though, and is accessible from any web browser.  I uninstalled it because I am paranoid over security.

I was just going to install it until I saw that it is using gtalk. I block every ip, name that comes from google :) I wish that they were using something like actual jabber protocol.

i just read the fine print
here's part of it

7.4 Google: Gbridge is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by Google Inc. Gbridge use your Google account for the purpose of authentication and connection to your friends only.

so it's not a google product

Sure it is not a google product but it is using a google product as backbone of their service.

I don't know anyone using it.

Me and a whole lot of people here in the South Americas use it. The net is not that stable and fast here but when you experience a lot of outages and/or other flukes with the MSN messenger, GoogleTalk doesn't experience any problem.

This made the switch to use a multi-messenger tool like Pidgin a necessity for me.

I only use GoogleTalk (Gtalk). I got so sick and tired of all the stupid addon crap from Yahoo! IM and MSN Messenger, like ugly emoticons, buzzes, long animations, advertisements, and all manner of other bloat. Gtalk is lean, mean, and sticks to the basics. I don't know how many resources other IM clients use these days because I haven't used anything else in a couple of years, but Gtalk is currently using only 5MB of RAM.

I love Gtalk. Also, I have it set up to archives all of my conversations to my Gmail account. Then in two years when I remember having a conversation with someone about a particular topic, but I can't remember when, I just search from within Gmail and usually find it pretty quickly.

Yeah I hear you both on google talk.
I don't like yahoo but my family and friends do.
I tried to get then to switch to Skype but no go.
I tried to get them to do google talk too.
No msn though, thankfully.

In telecommunication networks, a bridge is a product that connects a local area network (LAN) to another local area network that uses the same protocol (for example, Ethernet or Token Ring)

@CMPM: Why don't you use a multi-protocol client like Pidgin?

Is Pidgin still llimited in the case of external protocols (i.e. ICQ) like other Jabber clients or might it work without XMPP servers?

Back on topic, GBridge is outstanding.  Works a lot like Hamachi with more of an FTP feel to it.  You can use any browser to connect to your machine and down/upload files.  Like I said, it even works for my WinMo 6.1 IE.  Really nice, but my paranoia says "Is it too good to be true?"

Is Gbridge only for remote connections or can I use it to make virtual LANs for gaming, etc?

Not sure Gbridge is good for game or not, but it certainly offer much more than just remote control. I used it to manage all my pcs. Sharing files, sync folders, backup, vnc... I can streaming play my mp3s on my home computer remotely! I like it so much and I am not alone. Gbridge's forum is full of fans even some of them are there to report bugs. Definitely a must-have freeware! I have recommeded it to many friends so I can exchange files with them safely.  ;)

Well I play chess with my brothers and we communicate with the text message part of it.
When we want to we will fire up yahoo.
But it takes a lot of resources, much more then Skype, which I have one friend on and my household.
My wife's sisters are computer challenged :) so it don't matter what is used, it's complicated.

For playing LAN games over Internet with friends, I use Remobo (http://www.remobo.com).  It's a free VPN and very easy to set up.  Also, it has built-in VNC, which is quite handy for remote technical support for my mom (or wife's sister  :P)
