Since SoftMaker Office gets mentioned on this forum pretty regularly, I would like to inform you that SoftMaker Office 2008 for Linux is now in public beta. It comes with TextMaker 2008, PlanMaker 2008, and SoftMaker Presentations 2008. You can download the free beta version from www.softmaker.comMartin Kotulla SoftMaker Software GmbH

We are busy working on it. Hopefully we'll at least have the private beta soon...

+1 for enthusiastic expectations for DataMaker.
What SoftMaker has done with the rest of the suite has been remarkable: stable, easy-to-use, solid competitor to MS Office, yet not a copy. I wonder how similar DataMaker will be to Access. I feel like Access is weighed down by a ton of backwards compatibility issues, and that if DataMaker doesn't try to emulate Access but starts from a clean slate, they could wind up with a really compelling product.

Damn it, I don't have a working Linux available right now. Can anyone share some info on how well the program works compared to other Linux office suites?

It's great news. I tried it, but can't find a way to get a two-page (facing) view of my docs. This is basic. I also need integration with citation software, because the built in facilities are pretty spartan.
Without that, I'm afraid I cannot move to softmaker fulltime.

Two-page view is on the must-do list for the next release. For citations, we are looking into hooking up with Zotero.
Best,

Free alternatives? I'm not sure what you mean. At any rate you need to get the hardware, which isn't free. You mean a tablet OS that's free?

Ah, sorry - I meant free alternatives to SoftMaker Office for Android, such as "ThinkFree Mobile" and "OfficeSuite". Of course, I doubt either of those will handle SoftMaker file formats...
