A bug ?
« on: November 11, 2005, 05:32 AM »
Hello !
First, bravo for a great idea and a fine program, and thanks for making it free !
However, I think I may have run into a bug :
I start the program (pause key), make a search (for a program I want to run) then press the corresponding number key.
This is the normal procedure, and everything works as advertised (and fast, too ;o)
But, when the program is launched (slowly), my (slow) hard drive keeps working until I press pause to bring back F&RR and pause again to make it go away.
I found out that the reason the programs are slow to launch is that F&RR uses the disk even when it has finished searching, when a program is run.
It does this even when I manually stop the search before launching the program (using the ESC key).
Feel free to contact me if you need more details, or need help testing for corrections : dpierron(roundy thing almost like a a)gmail.com !

once you launch a program, F+R should by default not just stop searching but go away completely into tray, and NOT be doing any more searching..

also if you hit escape it should stop all searching and disk access.

can you shed any more clues into the phenomena.. does it always happen or only with certain programs?

Hey, you were fast on this one
1) when I run a program using F&RR, it does go away in tray when I press a number key, but it doesn't stop searching (or at least using the disk) ; moreover, if it DID stop using the disk before i pressed a key (e.g. I pressed ESC, so it stopped, and then I press a number key), it starts using the disk again.
I don't know if I'm very clear, I'm not a natural English speaker  ;)
The phenomena always happens, whatever the program launched.
I attached screenshots of Sysinternal's Process Explorer window showing the IO delta generated by F&RR, along with comments.

what a nice post - and i learned something new about process explorer that will be quite useful..

that is really strange behavior - i assure you it shouldn't continue searching after it launches an app..

this is great timing because im just starting a major round of updates for F+R version 2 this weekend i'll try to look into this and see if i can figure out what might be doing this right away.

i do have a couple things you could test:
if you hit escape after it shows notepad then it stops search.  if you then right click on notepad and say "launch and stay open", can you see if the disk usage resumes then as well?

sysinternals also makes a util called FileMon which shows exactly what file access is taking place, i wonder if that would yield some insight..

just tested with process explorer sysmon, and my F+R is not showing any extra file activity after a program launches..

one thing that was usggested at some point was that network shortcuts that F+R tries to resolve can account in some processor time and i'll be fixing that in the next update.

but it would be nice to find out whats causing this behavior since its not happening with me..

i wonder if its trying and failing to save its settings maybe? or something is going wrong when trying to save its settings (which happens when it minimizes)?

running filemon might help shed some light if you're willing.

I think that I made a major breakthru : the bug arises if and only if I use a number key on the keyboard to run a program from the result list ; if I use the mouse it works, and it also works if I select the item using the arrow keys and then press enter...
I've got a AZERTY keyboard, so maybe that's the trick ? Let me explain my idea : When I say I use a number key, I mean that I simply hit that key (e.g. the '1' key) which would normally produce a non numeric symbol when simply pressed (e.g. the '&' symbol) but seems to work automagically in F&RR (well done, this).
Maybe F&RR searches for concat(whateverITyped, '&') ?

I'll try and run FileMon to check which file is accessed, and tell you the result ASAP.

PS : thanks for the info about the download link, it was very weird... I had to rename the file and then it worked ... I'll think about posting in the forum about Griddler, of course !

i'm sure that's it -
whats happening is that its probably BOTH detecting the press of the number key, launching the app, and then instantly received what it THINKS is another search before it has time to close, and so its begining a new search right as its minimizing to the tray.

i will fix this behavior asap (i'll try this weekend); in the meantime you might want to disable auto-launch on digit press and configure it to launch on like alt+1 or ctrl+1 and see if that fixes it.

Well, I tried what you suggested and it works ; I disabled the 'digits keys ...' option and enabled the launch using the CTRL key. And now, it works and doesn't consume any unnecessary disk time !
Well done, M. Mouser

i actually have mine set like this too, and am thinking of making it default, just because it then also lets you search for files with numbers in them..
