I wouldnt make it default either, but I really like the suggestion from your second link

Wish list:

    * The ability to invoke this program through a combination of mouse and keyboard shortcut, such as left clicking an image [file] while holding down (shift), and otherwise having another image viewer function as the default viewer for the system. I realize this is unusual but surely it is possible-
actually that would be nice for lots of different filetypes / programmes!
another option - I know XYPlorer has some sort of open with menu for individual filetypes (that I havent setup yet)

- I tried the new Fast Picture Viewer today, and it really is fast, but there were far too many JPG images that were not being displayed correctly, so I removed it again. Is it working all right on your machines?

Yes, its working just fine for me. Maybe its your graphics card that's having problems displaying them (since Fast Picture Viewer uses it for rendering them).
