Please share your favorite search engines.
« on: July 29, 2008, 07:03 PM »
Ok we already know and use google,  so no need for repeating or hijacking the topic with which one is best wars. I would like to compile a practical search engine list that has proven quality search engines in it. So please list your favorite search engines(specialized or non specialized) with short description

http://scroogle.org/  this one is for cookiless - anonymous google search. It is not quite a search engine but it can be helpful to those who hate google privacy practices.

http://www.sxc.hu/index.phtml Image search engine

http://www.dogpile.com/ non specialized search engine

www.yahoo.com non specialized search engine

My favorite "alternative" search engine is Clusty. I find it especially useful when searching for more obscure things that I'm harving a hard time otherwise honing in on.  It's powered by VivĂsimo. It draws from multiple search engines, including web/blog/wiki/news. Custom tabs can be created to customize what is used.

Most importantly, it "clusters" all of the results, essentially dropping them in folders allowing you to view a selection of the total results by category.  Attached is a donationcoder search, showing how it broke it down into reviews, discussions, et cetera.

Yeah, yeah, I know it's Yahoo powered, but I like it's simple, no-nonsense Image search that finds things the other engines don't.
(and no, I don't mean by turning off the "Offensive Content Filter"...)

For electronic versions of books, especially technical books:

http://ebdb.ru

(The site is in Russian, but you shouldn't have too much trouble using it even if you don't speak Russian.)

Click on "ebdb in English" once you get there.

http://www.iconlook.com/ icon search engine, very handy when you need an icon for a doc or shortcut.

There's a thread for such search engine. For sounds, see this thread.

Anyways, check out Top 100 Alternative Search Engines for a comprehensive list of search engines and reviews.

RIAA Radar - Find out if an album was released by a member of the RIAA. You can search by artist, label, or album name.

Likin' Hakia!

I use Wikipedia a lot, but Yahoo is still my preferred search (I like how it 'Feels' - kinda comfortable).

Google with the FireFox 'CustomizeGoogle' add-on [https://addons.mozil...US/firefox/addon/743]doesn't suck as bad as the Generic Google! And, it can HELP with the privacy issues!

ps:

The RIAA scares me!  :eusa_naughty: :harhar:

I like the idea of this one.  I will have to check it out.

Personally, I find one of the best sites for searching for specific books (and now music and other things as well, though I haven't used it for that) is AddAll.  I heard about it in college back in the late 90's and they probably saved me about half on my books.  They really haven't changed much in the way it works or the interface either - such a rare thing nowdays.  It just works!
