Wordle: Create Beautiful Word Clouds
« on: July 22, 2008, 04:03 AM »
Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.

This is a Java applet, so you will need Java installed and enabled in your browser, to be able to use this.

In order to save the images, you will need to make a screenshot. (If you don't already have something for that, this would be a great time to try mouser's Screenshot Captor)

you know what would be cool is if we added a mod for the forum so you could ask it to generate a cloud (or just the raw text for the cloud) of all the post text by a given user.  suitable for a teeshirt as app says.

Or how about generating a cloud for a speech (or speeches) given by the politico of your choice?
Or a series of official statments on a hot topic?

If you did it over time you could see how the "slant" was changing.

Elections coming in the US.  Just a thought. ;)

This idea is just great!!
And I just found out how to describe DC: "DonationCoder.com is a site where people support each other through donations to make software".
At least, that's what I figure, from the following image:
Screenshot - 2008_07_22 - 1210-58.png
Made from the DC About page. :)

PS: the fact that "people" and "software" are the two largest words only shows that the About page describes DC perfectly!

i think it would be fun if we made tshirts like this maybe for the fundraiser.
(either a tag cloud for the site itself or like i said for the specific person who is getting the tshirt made out of their post text).

we could make mugs from it too of course, it's a kind of cool idea.

on a blog i read sometimes i saw one of these, i didn't know what it was then, anyway here is the link http://wickedanomie....my-dissertation.html  - she is a phd student (and a teacher/lecturer) in the US somewhere and it is her dissertation, as the name of it suggests.

Here's the result of running the fSekrit readme.txt through wordle. A bit funny seeing the result... could be a useful app if there was a local version which could handle huge inputs - oh, and filter source code.

another cool mod for forum would be:
show text of all posts which also contain a certain word in them, or show text of all posts from a thread.
very cool ideas.

maybe we can get wordzilla to write this?

I made this cloud using an old article I particularly like:

Screenshot - 23_07_2008 , 2_49_28.png

Or how about generating a cloud for a speech (or speeches) given by the politico of your choice?
Or a series of official statments on a hot topic?

I'm afraid we'd only get a word out of it: PR ;D

The T-shirt idea sounds good, a philosophical touch in clothing :)

the SQLNotes thread sounds like a good candidate - enough there for a whole wardrobe...

I think the note-taking thread has enough text to clothe a small country.  ;D

It would be interesting to see the results if you could feed it the entire text of the Bible. Or Anne Frank's Diary.

I suspect the law of diminishing returns would come into play for 'larger' texts...

I tried to feed the entire text of Tale of Two Cities and it didn't do anything at all.  No errors, no crashes, nothing.

Sort of what you'd expect from something written by Charles Dickens.

They've been trying to fit that book into a box since it came out in 1850-something.

Here's the EULA for MS Vista: Looks like they know what business they're in. ;)

What did we come up with?...

Linux, or something like it?

I'd love to throw some old chatlogs through it, usernames & all. (after cleaning out the timestamps)

You'd not only get to see what we talk about the most, but you'd see who the biggest blabbermouth in the channel is, too. (in theory, of course) :D

40hz: I would have expected "NOT" to show up on that EULA picture - but perhaps it's filtered out because it's such a common word? :)

app103: I don't think you need to cut out timestamps yourself, wordle filters out a lot of stuff by it's own.

FYI: "not" occured 102 times in 5,622 words for 1.8% of the total word count in the EULA I used.

(And yes - I'm surprised too!)

Notice how advertisements are included in this wordlet from the thread "InstallSafe $7.50" here at DC. Google or Scholar are not mentioned anywhere in the thread - that is, in the ad cleansed version that I normally get to see:
