How to prevent Win+S from sending the system to sleep?
« on: July 20, 2008, 09:08 PM »
On both Windows XP and Vista, pressing Windows+S key stores the session into memory (not sure if it is standby/sleep or hibernate) and resumes when the system is restarted. How do I prevent this? I don't want Win+S key to do anything to do w/ power management.

Thanks in advance.

create an autohotkey script that uses the win+s shortcut.

That doesn't seem to be one of the standard listed Windows key shortcuts, (Shortcuts - not saying it's a complete list).

On mine it opens up Stickies and I don't think the author would have grabbed an existing standard Windows shortcut.

Are you sure it's not your keyboard driver, (if using 3rd party kb - I've got a Logitech G15), or some software you're running that is mapping the key combination?

Does it do it in Safe Mode?   If not, then it's definitely a driver or software.

Also, normally power management by way of keyboard is usually handled by dedicated keys: power, sleep and wakeup, (at least on all the keyboards I've seen).

EDIT: Just had a look at Microsoft's site, they use 'Windows + S' for toggling CAPS Lock on their Natural keyboard.

I have never had Win+S do anything on any of my PCs - PS/2 keyboard, wireless USB, G11, or laptops - it must be some weird software triggering it...

I'm not currently at my own computer, but Win+S does not make this PC sleep. It is a Microsoft Natural Multimedia. Win+S doesn't seem to do anything.

in Opera at the moment,
Win+S selects the "Greetings tomos" text in top-left of page :)

Which would be pretty much the same as pressing 's' only ;) ('s' and 'w' cycle the selection on links of the page)

Win+S doesn't do anything here either, on XP64... so either it's a Vista feature, or some custom keyboard hotkey thingie?

@f0dder: nope, not on Vista64. From the testimonials on this thread, I think it must be related to some software sri has running.

And it should be easy to track down since it's happening on both XP and Vista.

On Vista Home Premium here and Win+S does a screen clipping in One Note 2007.

@sri: do you have Phrase Express?  ;)  i vaguely remember someone here at DC complaining that a program assigns that key (Win+s) to System sleep, thereby conflicting with another program on that person's computer.

ok, found it.

...
Yikes!  I once tried Phrase Express and had fits with it. It took over the Win + S key and made it the Sleep key. But I use MS OneNote 2007, which uses the Win + S key for screen grabs - and Phrase Express does not allow their hotkeys to be disabled or modified. The developer's response to my query about this was to tell me to close all other programs that used Hotkeys whenever I used Phrase Express!!

I never used Phrase Express again!

Thanks.

Jim

@sri: do you have Phrase Express?

- yes, I think sri uses/used-to use Phrase Express:

tinny, did you try the free Phrase Express. I am curious to understand why you would pay up for DA when you can have Phrase Express for free.

Well, sri, now you have at least one reason to try out DA ...  ;)

just found another thread where TucknDar reports that "PhraseExpress doesn't do that" anymore. so now we can only wait for sri's confirmation. ;)

PhraseExpress doesn't do that now, though. Just tried ;)
