Commit history: how high normally & what is it?
« on: July 17, 2008, 06:24 AM »
pc acting a bit funny
so I look in Process Explorer

"Commit History" is constant around 1.5GB - seems very high whatever it is
Couldnt find anything on internets to explain it - is it memory use?

Curious :) any ideas what it is & how high it would "normally" be?

I know there was a good bit of talk in some thread here about Process Explorer & meaning of graphs but I could not find it

http://en.wikipedia....g/wiki/Commit_charge

In computing, commit charge is a term used in modern Microsoft Windows operating systems to describe the total amount of virtual address space for which the backing store is the pagefile. It may be thought of as the maximum potential pagefile usage.

here's my current one

As long as you don't go over the Commit Charge Limit (which you can see in justice's shot), you shouldn't worry. Although 1.5 and 1.9 GB of commit charge are pretty high figures, I rarely reach 1.5 even when playing the latest games (I'm usually between 350-700), so you two must be running tons of apps (or Firefox 2 :P)

limit goes up to 5GB here, so looks like I dont have to worry about 1.5GB usage

(I had looked up "commit history" in Wikipedia, unfortunately they didnt connect the two)

oops, 2 new posts

Lashiec, just after rebooting I'm using 750mb and rising slowly

No Vista jgpaiva..

750meg commit right after booting? Wow, you must have many services/trayapps running... after running my box for 1½, having done lots of stuff in FF3 (only 4 tabs open currently though, albeit one of them being facebook), and "not so much other stuff" running, I'm at ~555megs of commit.

in Opera now with just a couple of tabs it goes down to under 500 and fairly steady
must be the 80 tabs in FF then :-[  (or maybe one of them in particular)

Well, 1 GB for 80 tabs is not exactly a conservative usage of memory (nor very normal). I say this because the other day I had around 200 tabs in Opera, and memory usage was around 450 MB (for the browser, not total usage)

Were you using Facebook? ;D

"Unused memory is wasted memory" :) - sure, you shouldn't go overkill and be a sloppy programmer, but it make sense for a webbrowser to keep page cache in-memory for fast back/forward, caching of images for re-use, et cetera.

Imho, FF3 isn't bad at all :) (and keep in mind you should look at "private bytes" or "working set private" figure, not "virtual size" or the "total working set").

no
in fairness, before I rebooted FF was using between 5 & 600MB for the 80 tabs (cant remember exactly 5something :))
I'm down to about 50 tabs now & 260mb usage [private bytes] for FF... commit history says 750 altogether currently

[edit] tidied up a bit :P

Is it the difference between the page file and the swap file?

With tinyresmeter.
I have a varying range of 1gb to 1.5 for the page file.
The swap file is at 600mb and varies but never over the pagefile.

So is the 'commit' the page file or swap file.

Page file=what's available,
Swap file=what is being used.

?

page file = swap file... swapfile is win9x terminology, pagefile is NT terminology. But it's the same thing.

The commit charge limit basically shows how much memory you can allocate, backed by the pagefile (if you use one), and possibly growing the pagefile if needed. I think I already linked to this wikipedia article in another thread :)

No problem - it's always good getting the DC threads cross-referenced :)
