Rest In Peace - George Carlin - 71

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - George Carlin, the frenzied performer whose routine “Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television” led to a key Supreme Court ruling on obscenity, has died.

Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, went into St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica on Sunday afternoon complaining of chest pain and died later that evening, said his publicist, Jeff Abraham. He had performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. He was 71.

“He was a genius and I will miss him dearly,” Jack Burns, who was the other half of a comedy duo with Carlin in the early 1960s, told The Associated Press.

Carlin’s jokes constantly breached the accepted boundaries of comedy and language, particularly with his routine on the “Seven Words” — all of which are taboo on broadcast TV and radio to this day.

Rest in peace. He was one of the greatest comedians of all time. George, you will be missed.

I second that emotion, Josh. Having been a fan and follower for almost as long as I can remember, I feel as though I've lost a personal friend. Along with his other attributes, Carlin was one of the clearest thinkers of our time (IMHO) especially in so far as seeing through BS and foolishness. His comedy made us laugh then seriously examine much of what we do ... or don't, e.g. protecting the rights of the fetus vs. the lack of support for the care of young children.

RIP, George, RIP :(

George Carlin was the one and only true sage of the 20th century...he forced us to look at ourselves and the things arround us for what we/they really were, not what we wanted or pretended them to be.

The world is a lessor place to be now,

RIP George Carlin

Carlin Carlin was a master of language and form, and was the only comic I've ever seen who could tell Americans how full of shit we are without joking it up. By the end, he simply expressed the truth, no frills attached. As Carlin himself put it:

"Don't confuse me with those who cling to hope. I enjoy describing things the way they are, I have no interest in how they 'ought to be.' And I certainly have no interest in fixing them. I sincerely believe that if you think there's a solution, you're part of the problem. My motto: Fuck Hope!"

Very very sad. Indeed the world is worse-off without this man.

I've been a fan since the days of the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.  I loved his love of the language and his attitude about our society.  We were blessed to have him.  Screw rest in peace.  Give 'em hell George!

how about some youtube videos for people who aren't familiar with his sharp wit:
http://www.youtube.c...earch_type=&aq=f

one of the things i admired about him is that unlike many comedians who started out with a biting raw angry approach and then got really tame and safe as they get more famous and wanted to break into mainstream.. carlin went the opposite direction -- from a normal comedian to someone who got angry when he saw bullshit and tried to expose it with humour.

before anyone starts to reply -- no politics please.. let's keep this on carlin.
if you didn't agree with his politics you probably also didn't find him funny, but we might all agree it's nice to hear someone speaking his mind in an age where people often have to choose their words so carefully.

We Like War: http://ca.youtube.co...&feature=related

The guy was simply brilliant. The stuff he came up with was just... Well... I was going to get into some theory of humour, but that gets political pretty quick. ;)
