Deozaan:
What to do with a non-functioning irreparable wall clock--
Write the following mssg on a piece of one-inch masking tape and stick it to the clock face:
'HA HA MADE YOU LOOK'
-holt (December 11, 2017, 01:36 AM)
--- End quote ---

I don't get it. What does this have to do with programming?

IainB:
^^ I'd recommend it (as being more useful) spending time replacing the clock anyway, rather than spending the time necessary to stick a derisive message on its face. It's all about time.

holt:
^Deozaan & IainB -- OK I suppose an apology is in order for the taped clock joke. I kind of imagined the unfixable wall clock as sort of a mutually common denominator between computer programming and time. But I realize I left out some helpful hints, such as that the clock would need to be hanging on a wall in someone's residence, or garage, or business, or say, a college professor's typically cluttered office, to be seen as a sort of 'standing joke', a teaser to invoke friendly conversational overtures. Even at that, I have to admit it's a bit of a stretch. The 'ha ha' part could at least be left out, to help avoid offending anyone. By the way, I broke our kitchen wall clock about a month ago while replacing the AA battery. It slipped through my fingers and fell about one foot or 1/3rd meter onto the kitchen table; really not far at all. But after resetting the time and finally getting it to stay put on the wall, there the clock hands stayed stuck 'forever' at eight minutes to twelve.

IainB:
@holt: Please, don't apologise! None required - for me, at any rate. I don't insist that every joke must amuse me to be a valid joke. I'm no official guardian of "correct" humour in this thread, or the forum.
Everybody is entitled to have a different sense of humour, whether one likes/understands it, or not. Vive la différence!

Deozaan:
Here's my opinion, as curmudgeonly as it may be:

Part of telling a good joke is knowing your audience. Programmers tend to (try to) be precise in their language, since being imprecise easily leads to bugs in code. Posting a joke in the "Best Programming Jokes" thread implies it will have to do with programming, and sets an expectation for the reader of what to look for in the punchline. If the joke has nothing to do with programming, then it seems fair that a programmer reading the joke may get caught up trying to find the programming part of the joke instead of appreciating the joke on its own merits.

If you want to tell a silly joke that's not about programming, go right ahead. We already have the Silly Humor thread, where such a joke can be given all the appreciation it deserves.
