- Does unlocker work on Windows XP 64 or Vista 64? Not yet, I am working on it.
Unfortunatelly, it still doesn't support Vista 64.

In the meanwhile, for those in the same situation as i am, you can use Process Explorer's feature named "find handle", to find out which app isn't releasing its lock on the file ;)

I just discovered what is already known, but was never mentioned on DC, so here it is:

- Promotional feature: Added fully optional shortcuts to eBay during the installation. Simply untick "eBay shortcuts" in the choose components page during install if you do not wish to have those.

On all systems I installed the new version I experienced the problem described here:

The problem with this version is that it installs a program called eBayShortcut.exe. The installer even gives you the option to deselect this but unfortunately it gets installed anyways. What makes it worse is that it is not uninstalled correctly by the installer which is a big problem.

I can confirm this, of course I unchecked the "eBay shortcuts", but it was installed anyway (on WinXP twice and once on Vista).

The batch file published on the mentioned site or here for removing this stuff works, but I still found another instance of this file at C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\AD ON Multimedia\eBay Shortcuts\.

It's probably harmless, but this a reliable and fast way how to destroy a good reputation of otherwise extremely useful application.

Weird - on my XP (x2), Win2k (x1) and Vista (x1) systems selecting NOT to install "ebay shortcuts" works... At least, I've always de-selected the option and gone ahead with the installation and I can't find any evidence that the shortcuts have been installed on any of my systems.

Weird, indeed. It happened on ALL my three installations, and I'm not the only one. Maybe an updated installer? Anyway, it's not that big issue to lose more time with it. I just wanted to inform others, because I suddenly discovered the eBay shortcut (I don't have any icons on desktop, it just appeared in FARR window), and became suspicious from where it appeared.

OK, I just checked and the ebayshortcuts installer WAS in the program directory (for Unlocker). None of the other links were on my system, though...

So why would I want shortcuts to ebay to be installed with unlocker anyways? I really don't think unlocker can interact with the ebay website in any way... oh well

I didn't see the date in the subject, thought they had released yet another update...

I can verify what Darwin said, the shortcuts don't get installed but the installer is dropped into the program folder anyway.

Well not a problem as long as it doesn't do anything, for me. The bigger problem is that it doesn't work on Vista 64bit yet!

probably the author didn't realize that un-checking the 'eBay shortcuts' option doesn't stop the installer from installing the eBay files. has anyone tried corresponding with the author regarding this?

This seems pretty standard to me, actually. Check out the program files folder for any program that offers to install a toolbar - particularly Yahoo! toolbar - and you'll probably find the installer for the toolbar lurking there, even if you opted not to install it. AFAICT, un-checking the "eBay Shortcuts" option does stop the installer from running, but it does dump the exe file into the unlocker directory under Program Files.

That behavior is probably part of the deal Unlocker has with eBay. Unlocker has to install something, even if it doesn't get activated, to benefit from the affiliate arrangement.

Plus - eBay's installer is always just a click away should you ever change your mind.
(I'm joking! Hold the flames. ;))

You may be joking, but I'm SURE that this is exactly the thinking behind it...

Is there a reason why people just don't delete the eBay related files manually? Why use a batch file?

- one reason is that they are placed in five different locations,
and by using the batch you're sure to get them all.

CODE
start /wait unlocker1.8.7.exe /S
ping -n 2 127.0.0.1 > nul
DEL /F /Q "%ProgramFiles%\Unlocker\eBay_shortcuts_1016.exe"
DEL /F /Q "%UserProfile%\Application Data\Desktopicon\eBayShortcuts.exe"
DEL /F /Q "%UserProfile%\Desktop\eBay.lnk"
DEL /F /Q "%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\eBay.lnk"
DEL /F /Q "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\eBay.lnk"

Version 1.8.8 is available. Still no 64-bits version, nor any Win 7 version. You may want to untick "eBay shortcuts" during installation.

Unlocker 1.8.8 - 26/10/2009

- Improved behavior: Improved the way DLLs are unloaded.
- Promotional feature: Added fully optional shortcuts to eBay during the installation. Simply untick "eBay shortcuts" in the choose components page during install if you do not wish to have those.

I wonder how much eBay is paying people to include their crapware. I'm seeing it a lot now. :(

I use this one

http://lockhunter.co...mp;sm=main_window_64

I personally have no respect for people bundle crapware into their apps whatever their resonings are. If you want to make money, make it shareware. If you want to make it free, make it free then. If you cannot find enough time or resource to improve your app,  then stop developing it. Installing crapware spyware etc is just plain dishonesty.

Version 1.8.8 has been available for quite some time. It just never occurred to me to come over and make mention of it. It does work great with Win 7, though.

Tizer Unlocker is another free alternative, but looks like they don't have 64 bit support yet.

You have to fill out their form before downloading the software, but I suppose that's no big deal for most folks.

Unlocker 1.8.9 has been released with Win7 support and almost 64 bit support.

Unlocker 1.8.9 - 8/3/2010

The rumors of me not working on Unlocker have been greatly exaggerated. I have been very busy with pushing the envelope at work, MBA studies during evenings and week-ends, and life during the time left.

Still, I finally had a little time to address all the reported issues on Unlocker, and Unlocker now supports Windows 7. From a x64 stand point, it took me a couple of hours to get it fully working on my machine. I still have to sign the driver which might require a lot of paperwork, but hopefully it will not take long. For the impatient kind, I can provide alpha versions :)

Interestingly, now that I have a x64 machine, I had no alternative than to get Unlocker working. Despite the increased number of ersatz, none of them really did the job and I really had a motivation to get Unlocker working.

Finally, I addressed the topic of false positives with Unlocker on my my blog. There is no malware in Unlocker and there will never be. And for the record I am not the only one having similar issues...Promotional feature: Added fully optional shortcuts to eBay during the installation. Simply untick "eBay shortcuts" in the choose components page during install if you do not wish to have those.
