I've experienced 3 earthquakes, two in the UK and one in Japan.

It is a very disorienting sensation... you know that something just moved, but because everything moves the motion doesn't add up with what your eyes see.

I live near Springfield Illinois and I awoke to the furniture sidling across the hardwood floor.  This is the second quake I've experienced and the weird thing about this one was the sound that accompanied it.  It was like a train going by.

The most important thing about this is to appreciate my brilliant sense of humour:

<@mouser> when it happened i ran into the living room and my cat ran in from another direction too
<@mouser> we both looked at each other like
<@mouser> wtf!

There was a small earthquake in the same area in the late 80's, I lived in Indianapolis at the time and we felt it then.

for those wondering what the habanero savina reference is about (is anyone actually wondering?), when i went to buy my monthly tofu supply at the asian food store i saw a bad of *unlabeled* baby mini wrinkled red+orange pepper looking things.

Then yesterday i minced up some miscelaneous hot and sweet peppers and added them to my pot.  i took a little nibble of each one, some were hot.  then i remembered the little wrinkled mini red+organge guys in the unlabeled bag.  i took out a few, washed and minced them, added them to pot, took a nibble of one piece.  then my lips and mouth started to go on fire and i rushed to the refrigerator looking for milk and yoghurt, etc.  it was extremely painful.  thats when i got on the web and idenified my enemy and learned about savina habanero.

Actually by far the worst thing was not the pain in my mouth, it was the intense burning in my hands that has lasted almost 24 hours.  Crazy!

We had an earthquake in the UK about 6 weeks ago. OK it wasn't like San Francisco but nevertheless it was a very odd sensation. The epicentre was about 150 miles from my house but the whole house vibrated for about 20 seconds. At first I wasn't sure what it was as I had been having a wee drinkie and was half asleep watching TV at 1.30am

Odd sensation - not something I particularly want to experience again - and definitely not something I want to be nearer to.

for those wondering what the habanero savina reference is about

Wicked little beasts aren't they ;) I tried cooking with them once and wasn't really aware of their reputation ... BIG MISTAKE ! The meal was completely inedible as I treated them like normal chillis and bunged a handful in.

Actually the hotest thing I have ever had in my mouth was a Cajun influenced recipe in a small restaurant in Ontario called Psycho Wings. The menu does warn you not to try it if you have a heart condition but I figured it was a joke and I like hot Indian food. I have to say it had no discernible taste (unless you count pain) and I couldn't actually taste anything for about 48 hours afterwards. Unfortunately their website is down for maintenance but you can see a simple front page here. I quite like the flash video and the description.

The link reminds me of a terrible sunburn that I got while in South Korea (on Cheju-do or Cheju Island) in about 1997. My girlfriend at the time (and now wife) rubbed chilled soju (Korean vodka) all over me and then covered me in cucumber slices. Sheer heaven!

One lesson I learned years ago when me and my buddies used to drink beer and eat jalapenos', always wash your hands before using the head.
There are worse places to burn than your hands.  :D

for some reason, if you stick "habanero savina" into google, with the quotes, this post ends up #1

From wikipedia:
In February 2007 the Red Savina chili was displaced in Guinness World Records as the hottest chili in the world by the Naga Jolokia pepper. The Red Savina held the record from 1994 until 2006.[3]

.. cool.. i want one :)

Probably not - I think google likes this site because I have noticed forum messages in the index within hours on google.

Kinda fun putting forum user ids in google too - see where you pop up on the list ;)

Just for future reference Mouser, next time you get overheated by a chili, grab a slice of fresh tomato or lemon.  Even a pickle will work.  You want something acidic to cut the oils that cause the burn.  I was taught this by the prettiest little Mexican girl you would ever want to meet back when my babe magnet still functioned.
