I am suffering 'end of project blues' today.

Have been working on a website for the past month... it should have taken a week, but various complications have caused the project to drag on and on. I finally gave my client a deadline and the work is now complete.

Surely a reason to be happy? You'd think so; instead I find myself lost, lacking in motivation to do anything more than drip around the house or crawl back to bed.

Ho hum.

1. I'm content - I have pretty much everything I need to live and enjoy for a long time - friends, books, games, ideas...

2. I am not fulfilled - I have this niggly feeling that my nicely paid bossy job is really a waste of me, that i ought to be going back to something which pushes my talents, rather than just managing. I have these 5 or 6 ideas of me-in-the-future but I need to settle on one and go for it, else I will be stagnating.

But all in all, pretty happy - and the potential to be very happy should I just get my mind around #2.

Wonder if you're more likely to fill this in when you are extra happy / unhappy, polarising the results..   :-\

I am suffering 'end of project blues' today.
The reverse for me.  Just put to bed a fiendishly tricky one which resolved very nicely.
No big deal, just the pleasant feeling that I can go back to being retired... until the next time.

I have this niggly feeling that my nicely paid bossy job is really a waste of me

Good managers are hard to find. Perhaps you undervalue your contribution in that area.

...or reading this coincides with some circumstance.  Just about every poll here is susceptible to bias, eh?  ;)

Happiness should not be the purpose of life. To me one can be happy without being happy really. Being thankful can make everyone happy in life unless you suffer from serious health conditions where being thankful is not enough anymore. So i am at %100 constantly

being 100% happy might be like getting a perfect score when playing a videogame on beginner setting.. solution is to hit the Reset switch and start over on "Normal" difficulty level :)

I totally agree with kartal, there's just too much the average person takes for granted.

... and what's REALLY cool is when you then try it again on "Hard" and finally manage to get high 'scores'! :)

I'm not sure I totally understand what you mean...

Sure, being thankful for 'the good stuff' that you have helps. What's even more fascinating (to me) are people who get cancer or lose their legs and find even more happiness in their life through that.

"What if I prefer to be sad instead of feeling good?"
"Go ahead, do whatever makes you happy!"

Everything we do we do to feel better (and "less bad" is better too), even if it's sometimes not obvious.

I'd like to get to 100% here, so can you tell me how to enable god mode?

BrotherS, I had cancer when I was a younger man. So I know from my own experience.

What I was saying that %90 of people on earth have alot of reasons to be happy or emotionally steady during a day. Happiness is one of the feelings humans experience. We do have more complex emotions that cannot be explained as just simple happiness.

I am generally against the idea of pursuing happiness as a goal of life. Because most end up as dumb consumers during that path.

OK, then you are against pursuing happiness for that reason, but agree that true happiness is a good place to be?

Because in my opinion you can only have it if you handled those "more complex emotions" that you mentioned accordingly. And if you consume to become happy... well, I think we all agree that that's not happiness.

Well.. Given the fact that my laptop's HDD died the day before yesterday and i'm on "project time" (that's what we call the few weeks in the middle of the semester where it's a rush everyday trying to get all projects done), i sure can't be at 100%.
Still, I've been able to use my computer through an ubuntu live CD, and store most of the stuff on an USB pen, and i'll be able to recover most of the data from the near-dead HDD. Also, ubuntu has been treating me well (way better than i expected), and my school gets me access to computers with no problem.
Also, i'm still being able to be productive (maybe even more than before, since i don't have as much distractions :P), and the projects are going well. Thus, i just chose a 70% ;)

While we're at it I can recommend The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Llama. It's a good read even though if you want to follow everything through then it requires a lot of dedication, but even just for reading and thinking about what makes you happy it's an excellent book.

you're quite right, and I am good at it -managing talented people, develop talent, and deal with the rest of the business- it is certainly worth it to the company in question - saved their bacon when I joined, no question! But is it the best thing I can do for me, and the best I can contribute to "the world" ?

Lately I kind of feel guilty about it, and trying to figure out what idea of myself i want to develop - it might be keep this job and redevelop my hobbies more, or do another startup again, or it might be figure out how to get a job at Unesco or someplace like that - dont we all want to save the world?- or buy a farmhouse with good internet access and write, paint, take  pictures and pick up pottery... women have their midlife crisis early, I hear...

Of course 75% happy is fine, and it'd be more if my mother wasnt ill

What a difficult thing to calculate . . . where's the "I don't know" option?  :P

Get me some Kool-Aid and my happiness scale will be 110%! And I'm not even making references to drugs or cyanide. I just like Kool-Aid.

I've come across this in my life.
It has helped.
Part of many things I have seen and learned.

http://www.sacredart...ng.org/enneagram.htm

This is pretty cool but not something to live by, cause we do change.
More like a scent of the smoke of the fire within.

http://www.enneagram...om/dis_sample_36.asp

Happiness comes and goes I guess.
Leveling around 60%.
Even though I can relate to 'why am I here doing this'.
When I think there is something else I could be doing better.
But that passes and I just have to go with the flow.
And keep an eye out for better things ahead.

I could have a lot to say about this topic, but I have sworn off complaining for the rest of the month to see if it reduces my stress level any.  ;)

When questioned, people - on average - have a happiness level of about 80. So that peak around 80 in the results here makes total sense.

What surprises me a bit is that quite a few folks who voted here are not just not "very happy" but REALLY unhappy.

Spending a lot of time on forums seems to indicate loneliness.

A desire to help people with very few outlets to do it.
Although the internet is expanding greatly in this category,
being with someone for real is a better happiness which fluctuates anyway, in any situation.

Polls are not accurate sometimes, unless you have really honest people.
