Streaming movie into living room
« on: March 20, 2008, 09:26 PM »
i've been watching movies on my PC for some time now and i am looking into the best way to stream those movies into my TV with most minimal fuss, i mean without 15-20 foot cables. :) please do let me know if you have a similar set-up and/or any advice on how to go about this.

If you have a TiVo, get a wireless setup and run the server software on your PC. If you don't, get a Slingbox. Many of my friends have either setup and like it.

i'm also looking into wireless streaming or powerline wall adapters that can act like wired network. btw, correct me if i'm wrong but Slingbox seems to the other way around - TV to PC. on another note, retail-brands like TiVo and Slingbox isn't an option due to non-availability of those products here.

They have the SlingCatcher with makes it bi-directional.

How far is the TV from the computer? I had one of these and they worked great.

That distance, unobstructed, will be perfect quality. Stick some metal and electrical wiring and you might get some interference.

I use tvsersity (http://www.tversity.com/) to stream audio/video content to my xbox 360 in the living room.  My 360 is attached to the wireless network via a Buffalo Ethernet Converter.  Works very well!!!

Lifehacker has a recent article describing this.

i've seen this gadget called "Hard Disk Media Player" but it involves copying the videos into the device and placing it next to the tv.

Get an old Microsoft XBOX (the first generation, can be found very cheap on eBay, or from some friends that upgraded to newer consoles) with the DVD remote controller, install the free XBMC on it, and connect it to your network with a wireless access point.
You'll get one of the most flexible & feature packed media center around.

Bye!
