New Google "search site" box, but not yet from my pc?
« on: March 11, 2008, 12:43 PM »
Today CyberNet Technology News told about a new Google feature, a 'search site' box:

There may be times when you’re trying to find a page on a specific website but can’t find it for one reason or another. Thankfully there’s Google to help you search within a website so that you can easily find the page you’re looking for. Google has three different options available and each one is very simple to use but will help you find exactly what you’re looking for.

   1. Look for the Search Box
This is the newest method available when you perform a search at Google.com.  Google found that for certain websites, there are many visitors who usually end up wanting a refined search.  One example is Microsoft. People may search Google for Microsoft and then once they click through to Microsoft’s site, they perform another search for what they’re looking for within the site. Now when you do a search for Microsoft at Google, you’ll see a search box right after the result where you can enter a term and search within Microsoft.com. A screenshot of this can be seen below:

When the result appears with a search box (remember, not all results will show the search box), you can enter in another search term (like Windows Vista) and Google will search only Microsoft for Windows Vista related pages.

2) ... iPhone site:cybernetnews.com ...
3) ... (Advanced Search) ...

This box is almost genius, I think, because I could never remember what to type (iPhone site:cybernetnews.com) when I needed to perform such a search. But my problem is that I have not been able to get this search box to appear. I have a lot of addons and so on, so maybe they somehow are blocking it? Or more likely this feature is not yet available outside of USA? I will guess the last option. So I thought I would ask you guys to check if you can see such a box if you search Google for e.g. Microsoft Corporation, please?

Okay - the box is showing up when I perform the search from your site.
So I guess it has to do with me normally being redirected to Google.dk, then?
- because I cannot get the box to show up when I search the "normal" way.

"site:" is the switch I used most often, so I know how to find what I am looking for without search boxes :)

Curt: like housetier hinted, you don't need those fancy buttons :) you can either go through the advanced search page, or you can directly enter, for instance, "service pack download site:microsoft.com" as a search query.

Who gives a piece of yesterday's meal if I there are other ways or not? I WANT THIS BUTTON!!  :P

Furthermore:
... I could never remember what to type (iPhone site:cybernetnews.com) when I needed to perform such a search. But my problem is that I have not been able to get this search box to appear.

But thanx for the advices.   :)

I'm not sure why I would search microsoft or amazon through google instead of going to the site and using the site's own search - which usually has structured search adapted to that site's content and is going to be better.

But then I dont believe in google's pagerank when searching for specific professional/technical/specialised information - what's popular is often not what i want.

Because Microsoft's internal search is horrible at locating its own information.  Google does a much better job.

PageRank has nothing to do with the SERP results in Google.  This is an often misconception.

Hear ye, hear ye!

I'm often not able to find what I'm looking for with Microsoft's own on-site search, with google narrowed with site:microsoft.com I can usually locate whatever I need :)

I'm not sure about here, but the site: thing is very useful for forums as their searches usually suck (like they quite often have a minimum search query of 4 letters).
