Howdy Mahesh2k, I just read a review of the site on Ars Technica last night.  Here's the url: http://arstechnica.c...-a-bit-of-paint.html  I went to Skydrive and set up an account but it was too late in the evening to start playing with it.  I do like that there are three categories; private, share by invitation and public.  I'll be interested in seeing upload speed.

I set up an account, and uploaded some information that I needed to get home.  It's functional enough- pretty standard fare with the creation of folders and uploading information.  Downloads work just like downloads from any site.  I haven't tried any of the sharing features yet.

One nice feature is the fact that you have a direct url for access to the file.

But for the most part, it does what's advertised- no more, no less.

Using Windows Live, you will find sql files on your drive.
What they are or do, I have no idea.
I tried it in beta, so that may have changed, I don't know.

I use XDrive and it's sufficient for me.
Don't use it much, but when I need it it's there.

Nothing there now... I'm not really sure how it would even do this, since it's all web interface driven.  Are you sure they were from skydrive and not something else?

1. Less Bells & Whistles
2. Too many Ads
3. Bigger Storage (5GB is huge )
4. Question abt proivacy as usual when it comes to MS
5. Free! from frm MS i like it.

Some questions in mind?Maybe:
IS sharing or direct URL allowed?
IS this offer is going to stay or they are going to charge later on?Cause at that it will pains us even to move our files back to our hard disk.

O yeah, I took off Live Messenger that day too.
They were probably from it.
I had looked up why I had those files and I got the answer of Live something. So I dumped all live stuff. Except the writer which is pretty cool and no signing in to msn as far as I know.

Staying with Skype and yahoo messenger-which I don't keep loaded all the time-yahoo that is. I think Skype takes less resources then yahoo.

2. Too many Ads
Are we looking at different products?  On my skydrive page, I don't have *any* ads...

IS sharing or direct URL allowed?

Both are allowed.

oked up why I had those files and
if you choose to participate in the customer improvment program then you get those files which are hidden in the root, then sent to ms and removed. if you answer not to participate then no files are ever created. if you don't answer then the files are created but nothing done with them.

Thanks for clarifying that justice.

I just had noticed them there and googled the thing.
So I dumped windows live everything except the writer.

I really have no need for sky drive but it's fun to play.
At one time I had like 5 storage server type programs.
But I just don't have a need for them.
So I cancelled all but xdrive and picasso web albums and my blog.
Though I do have flickr and image shack for photo sharing also.

That totally explains it, because I never participate in those programs.  I'll take a survey, but I won't agree to have someone looking in on my computing.  A bit paranoid... but hey...

I know this thread is a bit dated, and wanted to update everyone that SkyDrive now provides 25 Gb for free, rather than the 5 Gb when this thread was new.

Also, I figured out it's quite easy to map network drives to various SkyDrive folders.  For example, I'm now dragging and dropping some of my programming files backups onto my networked drive letter (Y: in the screen shot below).  It uploads quickly to my /ProgFiles/ subdirectory on the site.

You can click the image below for the webpage from which I obtain a tiny little program, SkyDrive Simple Viewer, that shows you the path of a given SkyDrive folder in your account:

Is the simple viewer used for mapping the drive letter? Or how are you doing that?

You choose the drive letter you want (I think it defaults to Y if Y isn't in use).  On my notebook, Z: was in use as the wireless HP printer, so the default was perfect.

The only thing the Simple Viewer is for is so you can:
(1) log-on to your SkyDrive account and wait for the program to list your SkyDrive directories
(2) click on a directory within the Simple Viewer to see the corresponding WebDAV address
(3) copy-paste that URL from the viewer into the Map Network Drive dialog
(4) manually remove the leading https: and replace / characters with \ characters

That's it.

The viewer will look something like this after successfully logging into your SkyDrive account:

WebDAVAddress.png

Here's a link to one tutorial I found on how to do everything.  I think GHacks has another link.

Cool! I may have to actually start using my SkyDrive for something if it really is that large and handy. But I just gotta ask:

On my notebook, Z: was in use as the wireless HP printer, so the default was perfect.

...You mapped a drive letter to your printer?!? Why...?

Whatever you think about Skdrive remember it is MS and personally I don't trust them with my data since they lost a whole pile of community websites after a server failure (and didn't have backups).

I hope they learned the lesson (I certainly did - which is why I will never trust them to look after my files again - and that includes Office 360 or Office Live).

I didn't map the drive letter myself.  The HP printer software did it.  Not sure why, but I didn't want fool with it and maybe mess something up (my wife prints lots of coupons on our wireless printer)...

^ Probably for the built-in flash memory slots.  Mine does the same thing.

AH! Yes. That does ring a bell ... I'll have to add it to the list of reasons I never install HP's full suite driver packages.

Thank you.

Wandering a bit (farther) off topic ... Have you ever had any issues with it going to sleep/offline and not waking up? I was just fighting with an HP PhotoSmart D110 last week; every time it went night-night it would drop off the WiFi network and none of the lady's Win7 machines could then contact the stupid thing to wake it back up to print. I finally had to disable the Eco-Snooze crap to to keep the thing available for more than 15min at a time. A google search of the issue showed that HP doesn't have a clue what the problem is either (Saw a lot of angry Apple users during that search (hehe)).

Yep, my printer does have slots for SD. Still, as of this moment, I still have these drive letters unassigned:

F-X

So, plenty left for other purposes.
