Opera Browser Power-User Mods
« on: January 26, 2008, 11:26 AM »
I have heard there are *.ini files or other files in Opera that will allow numerous modifications to the browser and its functions.

What are these files and what is the best mod you have found most beneficial?

Thank you for your help in advance!

While we wait for the reinforcements, take a peek at nontroppo's wiki, particularly the customization section, to find quite some information about extending Opera. I think there should be another resource out there, he does not even list OSpell!

I use OSpell, for checking my spelling everywhere, and Flashblock, for blocking pesky flash, and be able to navigate the web without some annoying flash ad disrupting my music. Also, it has the benefit of letting me control which YouTube video should start downloading first, when I have a pile of them opened ;D

Hey Folks,

Just a note to say "Thanks!"  I have implemented some and are working on the others, but in my travels (and I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier) I found a wealth of knowledge on DC!  So, if this question ever comes up again, you might want to direct them their own backyard.

My Opera is friendlier now than it has ever been, Thanks to all of you. :)

I keep a running tips file on Opera, and here's what I've got to date:

OPERA TUTORIAL TIPS, TRICKS

GOOGLE DEFINE
Name:                &Define
keyword:   d
address:   http://www.google.co...e=utf-8&oe=utf-8

SETTING FONT TO SANS SERIF
The browser defaults are almost always overriden by author and user stylesheets. Opera even provides you with a way to tweak the defaults. For example, the default margin on the body element is 8px. Why? To ensure that text in an unstyled page does not "run wall-to-wall". If you do not like this, you may change the defaults using browser.css. It isn't provided in the default installation.

(1) Create a new text file with a .css extension, and save it anywhere (yes, anywhere);
(2) Open Preferences > Advanced > Content > Style Options > My Style Sheet, and point Opera to the location of your browser.css file in the [User Prefs] section, browser.css field.
(3) Save. Done!

D:\ybak\burn01 - apps\05-WebDev\Apps - Browsers\!Opera\INI Files\stylez.css
Content of stylez.css:
* {font-family: frutigernext lt regular !important;}o

Styles defined there will override the embedded application stylesheet, and will be overridden by any higher-level stylesheets. The only advantage of this method is that you can change the defaults if they annoy you. It is hence best used for most general customizations that will apply to all pages on the web. Unless, of course, you write CSS yourself and design web pages, in which case it is not recommended to use this stylesheet, for what you see — others shall not.

RESETTING YOUR OPERA PROFILE

— Run Tools > Delete private data to clear your cache and cookies.
— Close Opera completely.
— Delete the profile\opera6.ini file.
— Start Opera again.

This will re-create the profile\opera6.ini file from the operadef6.ini file in your Opera installation folder, and will contain data as if you had done a clean Opera installation. It should not affect your customizations (toolbar or menu setups, bookmarks, notes, passwords etc) or your mail / feeds.

Some Opera tricks I have found useful

1) how to export notes
http://www.dayf.de/w...peraNotes2RSS_Online
(i use notes a lot, both as a way to store info but also as a "quick paste" snippet storage (paste from note  :-* )

2) custom buttons

Wow, you guys have been pretty comprehensive! Hopefully, before 9.5 comes out I'd hope we could have a better integrated place for sharing Opera tips. I haven't added User JS to the wiki like OSpell as there used to be a dedicated site for User JS but it is currently frozen, so maybe I should add some basic User JS. OK, here are some more power tweaks to satiate you:

Fast navigate with Nicknames:
If your bookmarks have nicknames, you can press SHIFT+F2 to bring up a nickname dialog. As you start typing, as soon as you have entered enough letters to uniquely identify the bookmark you will automatically go there.

BBCode Menu:
You can add a BBcode submenu to your textedit menu, so you select text and can apply BBcode markup: http://operawiki.info/BbCode

Send selected text to an online clipboard (cl1p):
Add this to the [Hotclick Popup Menu] section of your menu.ini:
Item, "Add to Web Clipboard (Cl1p.net)"="Go to page, "javascript:(function(){if (window.getSelection()) {var s = window.getSelection();} else if (document.getSelection) {var s = document.getSelection();} else if (document.selection) {var s = document.selection.createRange().text;};var reply=prompt('Name of the clip?','').split(' ');var name=reply[0];var myURL='http://cl1p.net/'+encodeURI(reply)+'?nl=yes&A='+escape(s)+escape(' [copied from: '+document.location+']');window.open(myURL,'Cl1p.net','location=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=yes');})()""
(this is included in the latest version of my Web Developer menu)

Google cache a link, and send a link to TinyURL:
Add this to the [link Popup Menu] section of your menu.ini:
Item, "Cache of page (Google)" = "Copy link & New page & Go to page, "http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=opera&q=cache:%c""
Item, "TinyURL this Link (TinyURL)" = "Copy link & New page & Go to page, "http://tinyurl.com/create.php?url=%c""
(this is included in the latest version of my Web Developer menu)

Send an image directly to ImageShack:
Add this to both the [Image Popup Menu] and [Image Link Popup Menu] section of your menu.ini:
Item, "Send to ImageShack" =Copy image address & Go to page, "http://imageshack.us/transload.php?url=%c"
(this is included in the latest version of my Web Developer menu)

GMail 2 Fixes:
This really cool User JS fixes a bunch of bugs in Gmail to get it to work almost flawlessly in Opera 9.5:
http://futurama.goog...s.com/gmail_2_fix.js

Google Images Bypass:
Essential User JS to allow Google image results thumbnails to link directly to the image, rather than a framed page: http://userjs.org/sc...ogleimages-thumblink

Advanced Mouse gestures:
Here are some examples to give you ideas:

Toggle my hotlist panel, my view toolbar and personal bookmark toolbars on/off in one go (minimalist/maximalist toggle!):
GestureLeft,GestureRight,GestureLeft=Set alignment, "hotlist", 6 & Set alignment, "document view toolbar",6 & Set alignment, "Personalbar", 6 | Set alignment, "hotlist", 0 & Set alignment, "document view toolbar",0 & Set alignment, "Personalbar", 0

Show the cookies for the current page by drawing C:
GestureLeft,GestureDown,GestureRight=Go to page, "javascript:alert('Cookies stored by this host or domain:\n\n' + document.cookie.replace(/; /g,'\n'));", 1

Power navigation gestures; I like to have my browsing history without having to move the mouse, and this batch gets me my forward/back history with a tiny flick of the hand:
GestureLeft, GestureRight, GestureLeft="Show popup menu, "Internal Rewind History""
GestureRight, GestureLeft="Show popup menu, "Internal Forward History""
GestureLeft, GestureRight="Show popup menu, "Internal Back History""

As I love the "Go to nickname" function, I also have it bound to a mouse gesture:
GestureUp, GestureDown, GestureUp=Go to nickname

If any of you want a custom menu made with the Cl1p/tinyURL/Google cache/ImageShack/BBCode tweaks added in let me know and I'll whip one up for you.

The latest version of my Web Developer tools (lots of power user functionality in there too, new version only for 9.5, older version for 9.25 from http://operawiki.info/WebDevToolbar) is available from:

http://code.google.c...oolbar/source/browse

You have to manually put them in your profile/Menu and profile/Toolbars directories respectively. To toggle the toolbar on/off, you need to customize your toolbars and add the View toolbar toggle button (customize... > buttons > browser view > view button).

Wow, thanks nontroppo! Considering most of us spend a good portion, if not the majority of our day in and out of our browsers, these are great tips. And this is especially helpful with so much webware now. Being able to assign so many (that is, any) functions to keyboard shortcuts in Opera makes everything fly. nontroppo's tips save a shite-load of time and experimentation.

Hi Nontroppo,
Your http://code.google.c...oolbar/source/browse for the 9.5 web dev toolbar doesn't seem to lead to a download. I looked around and I could only find "This project currently has no downloads".
Unless I missed it, which is likely  ;D

Fast navigate with Nicknames:
If your bookmarks have nicknames, you can press SHIFT+F2 to bring up a nickname dialog. As you start typing, as soon as you have entered enough letters to uniquely identify the bookmark you will automatically go there.

Took this one a bit further as I love the nickname function but hate the Caps Lock button. Simply turned it of for all programs but Opera where I instead changed it to Shift+F2.

A really nice list of tweaks nontroppo :)

kiwi2b: you need to browse the trunk source, e.g. the direct URL is:

http://code.google.c...runk/WebDev_Menu.ini
http://code.google.c...k/WebDev_Toolbar.ini

You need to save them and manually place them in the correct directory in your profile folder.

A few UserJS that I have installed on my setup...

LinkAlert
Identifies links to specific file types, and displays an appropriate icon when the link is hovered.

MultiPopup
Configurable, pretty, pinnable, tooltips, with additional plugin support for live CSS editing, DOMViewer and element hiding.
Latest builds at the blog

Operapedia
Embeds a Wikipedia article relevant to your current Google search right into the Google page

GoogleAutoPager
Google search results that scroll on forever (auto-loaded when at bottom of the page).

Anyone else have other favourite UserJS?

I'm still wondering why Opera Software does not open an centralized page for all this information and extensions that are scattered around the web, and sets up an interface for managing and updating extensions within Opera. People always complain about Opera's lack of extensibility, and then you start hunting around, discovering that Opera is really extensible, but somehow Opera Software prefers the users to ignore that.

Then again, many people (including self-proclaimed tech gurus) ignore how the Opera browser is doing these days, in terms of features, and think the software is already dead. Oh, the ignorance... (and the laziness of not pressing F6, Tab, and typing "Opera browser")

@Ampa

You could stream search results pages with CustomizeGoogle for Opera script and a lot more:

  • Use Google Suggest
  • Rewrite links to point straight to the images in Google Images
  • Removes image copying restrictions in Google Book Search
  • Secure Gmail and Google Calendar, switch to https
  • Block Google Analytics cookies
  • Hide the Gmail spam counter
  • Remove ads
  • Anonymize your Google userid
  • Add a result counter in search result
  • Filter spammy websites from search results
  • Add links to WayBack Machine (webpage history)
  • Remove click tracking
  • and a few more tweaks...

Lashiec: indeed I wish Opera made my.opera.com more focussed on bringing together a unified resource, making the wiki obsolete, and hosting peoples projects for userjs / menus etc. I don't think they deliberately obfuscate this stuff, they just haven't prioritised a unified resource centre (to their own loss)...

General new tweak: The latest weekly snapshot has added a new tab closing preference which is IMO better than Opera's previous behaviour or the standard "move to rightward tab" behaviour:

@PhilB66: Thanks for pointing that one out - but it seems to clash with something else on my system, and the autopaging just produces a screen of 'random' HTML. I might see if I can find the conflict later.

Well, well, Jon von Tetzchner hinted in a interview that some extension-esque functionality will eventually come to Opera at some point. Those are good news :)
