I advise caution. Some naughty programmes place installation files in the user %temp% folder that are essential for the operation of the programme (and in their absence require re-installation) or successful uninstallation of the programme. Extremely irritating

Darwin,

I do realize that this is a possible consequence of deleting the temp files, but at 5 GB and still growing I really had to just bite the bullet and do it! As for those developers who put the reinstall files in there, well I guess I just won't be able to reinstall from there. And if I find any in particular I will definitely write them and let them know what I think of the practice.

Not that they will listen to me, of course. But it'll get it off my chest, and of they do hear that enough from their users, you never know - it might just affect their future behavior!

Thanks.

;D There are two on my system for sure that do this and I've only received a response from the $20 one... The $2000 hasn't deigned to respond!

I almost hesitate to ask - but I'll go ahead anyway!

What the heck software cost you $2,000?!?!?!  :o

use a software like SpaceMonger to find out which folder/file is taking the most space. i've heard that Microsoft Office's install log can substantial in size..

I use TreeSize Personal version - a paid version, though they also have a free version.  Sounds like a similar program.

Well... $2000 includes a couple of extensions, but ArcGIS 9.1 would have cost me in the neighbourhood of that had I had to pay full price (thank goodness for academic licencing, which brought the cost down to about $730)... I'd have to buy 9.2 to have a Vista compatible version as well!

Hi I'd like to delete the files in my Temp Folder located in Local Settings. I read the discussions above and decided to reboot my computer and then delete all files before today located in the Temp folder. No other program was running (except my Anti-Virus which is always running when my computer is on).

When I tried to delete the files, I got a prompt for some files saying they were "Read Only", so I don't go ahead with the deletion and thought I'd seek your opinion about such files. Thanks.

Hi BC5, I'd delete the old files that you CAN delete and leave the read-only ones alone. Unfortunately, this means that you'll have to make a note of each read-only file as the error messages appear and not select them during the next delete run...

PS I'm sure there is some command line instruction that you can invoke to automate this (ie skip the read-only files and continue with the deletion of everything else), but I'm too rusty on my command line syntax to even know how to begin...

Good luck!

!!! THIS WILL WIPE YOU OUT IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE
DO NOT USE THIS UNLESS  YOU ARE VERY, VERY SURE !!!

KILL EVERYTHING THAT'S UNPROTECTED
Off the top of my head, from a cmd prompt
del /S /Y <path to Temp Folder located in Local Settings>
(leaves empty folders)

from 4NT
del /S /X /Y <path to Temp Folder located in Local Settings>

The only problem I've ever had was having to re enter passwords being on web pages. In the past when I was using Google's browser Sync.

I went back to Foxmarks and it's not a problem anymore.

I use Cleanup!, ATF-Cleaner and Ccleaner.
Not necessarily in that order.
Plus GlaryUtilities, RegSeeker and AdvancedPersonalCarev2 at times.

Cleanup! is the deepest cleaner, prompting to log off to complete the clean. Which also makes it the most volatile if you don't know what you are cleaning out.

Most of the time I just use ATF-Cleaner and that's enough.
I run Ccleaner's registry scan to see how it's doing.
If it finds a lot I'll use RegSeeker which cleans deeper.

Anyway, for me and my computers it takes a load off the cpu by 5-40% at variable times. 40% - 80% spikes mainly. After cleaning I idle at arounnd 5% as opposed to 5-40% and more before cleaning.

The difference is noticeable on these two p3's, though I doubt if a core duo or quad would notice.

I have had nothing bad happen with all these tools in using either one or all of them.

One Cleaner will not get it all. I know because I can run one then another and pick up more. Files and registry entries.

Make a backup of your registry before cleaning it, to be sure you won't mess something up. I don't anymore, being confident in the tools. But with some other programs that I don't have and others do, I'd backup the registry.

As opposed to most techs advice they would say don't clean the registry. I do and see a difference in performance. So it depends on the person, computer and programs I suppose.

fodder's advice is sound for sure. Especially with installing programs, which is why I always 'download' instead of 'run' which operates out of the temp files. Downloading the program, by way of 'Run' downloads to the temp files and installing from there could make your temp files more important then they should be.

That's my opinion and experience.
People with thousands invested in programs would be wise to have 1 or more full backups of the entire system.
Worth the price of a duplicate Hard Drive of the same size imo.

Cheeky monkey  ;D I do image my HD daily - keeps me from a lot of grief! Of course, it was a hard-learned lesson... Actually, it was mouser's review of imaging and backup software that brought me to DC a few years ago. Of course, I had already purchased both Acronis TrueImage and Genie Backup Manager Pro and missed on what could have been my first DC discounts! Interesting that over that period of time, Genie Backup Manger Pro has introduced the ability to image a harddrive and Acronis TrueImage the ability to backup individual files and folders... FWIW, today I use Acronis TrueImage and Super Flexible File Synchronizer... GBM Pro has been relegated to the digital scrap heap (for now).

69gig exe file? O_o

I'd run a chkdsk /f on the partition before doing anything else.

That is a frightening file! You'd think that it has to be a mistake, but what the heck could cause that? Did you try to scan it with an A/V program? Don’t know how long that might take!  :o

BTW, can someone tell me how to clean the %temp% folder - with command line - but only the files older than 48 hours?

What kind of command I need to do? Thanks in advance.

One of the first Perl scripts I ever wrote was one that deletes everything older than 2 weeks from temp. Never had a problem.
