So what is the best/popular one now?
« on: January 09, 2008, 03:57 AM »
Just wanted to get a feel for popular opinion once again.

I have a couple of Vista PCs now so i was wondering which would be a great choice now.
I'd prefer a free option, if there are more items i should add, let me know.

Plus how can one update the review? The review is old and needs to be updated, i don't mind making a few changes, but how do i do that? It would be cool if it was in a wiki format then it would be super easy for all members to contribute!

That's all for now.

There must be more extenders than that - I run PowerPro, which has file box extension as just one of its myriad features.

yeah, there are way more choices than that but since you're focusing on free ones, try each one of them (provided it works with Vista) then let us know. i've tried all four but there is no best for me as each has its own unique features (fence-sitter). :) btw if you want, some customisation with Autohotkey could also come in handy.

Note FileBox eXtender doesn't work with Vista - they stopped development and made it free because they didn't want to develop it for Vista.

Edit ... OK I just looked at the website and they have released version 2 which is Vista compatible ??? Strange as the expressly stated they would not do this. Good for them though.

I use FlashFolder, but...

FlashFolder needs Windows 2000 or Windows XP to run. Vista is not supported yet.

yes, Vista compatibility was mentioned in this thread previously..

Must have missed it - strange that they changed policy though, unless they have open sourced it and someone else actually produced the new version. The explicitly stated that they would move from a paid to free product because it was impractical to update for Vista ... it doesn't affect me but I am pleased they have done it as it is a really useful little tool that I use daily.

the devs must have been feeling very generous indeed. first, they made it free then made it Vista-compatible..

So, to bump this thread again, what is the current best tool for this purpose? Filebox seems decent but it is no longer updated. I want to use something I know will continue to be updated.

Thoughts? Comments? Concerns? Quandaries?

Interesting that the final updates fro Filebox seem to have made sure it works with Vista and 7 (in both 32 and 64 bit versions). Maybe it has got a little more life in it.
