basically we went through all the items that were blogged on dc in the last year (so the blog was the first filter), and then just tried to select a representative subset of the best, with a strong emphasis on small new sites.  not very scientific.

i'd second that.. :) maybe this time, the selection should be done on a monthly basis.. then a subset of blogs would readily be available at the end of the year..
