How much have you downloaded, in the tray?
« on: January 01, 2008, 04:37 AM »
Hey guys, im looking for a minimal software that monitors the amount of data downloaded and displays this, preferrably in the system tray. It doesnt have to have the bells and whisles, or even a graph for that matter (read - it shouldn't be a burden on the system) ! It should just record the data downloaded and show daily, weekly and monthly statistics.

The closest ive got to is NetNak, it really is a good piece of software , but i think it could be better if it had support for tray icon displaying data downloaded amount. Any suggestions?

Have a look at "DU Meter" from Hagel Technologies -

I love this program and have used it for years. The latest version has an automatic mode in which it hides when there is no internet activity and becomes visible when activity begins. You can also make it partially transparent (adjust the amount of visibility). Check it out if your unfamiliar with it.

Yeah, the latest DU Meter is pretty nice. BitMeter is a great free alternative.

Admittedly it's not exactly what you asked for, but I really like NetLimiter for this.  It'll keep track of how much has been done through each application as well as the cumulative total.

Another freeware alternative: NetMeter http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/

I use it at home and work and it seems quite light on system resources.

thanks for your suggestions people, i thought i tried some of them already but the new DU meter is cool, a huge improvement over previous versions! ill try netlimiter next!

but can you guys sugget something that can keep track of both my broadband and dialup connection side-by-side, i mean record the amount of recieved data for broadband, and the time online for the dialup one. The DU meter can watch both connections but it mixes the data downloaded fro both the connections, so i dont get to know how much i downloaded via broadband.

or ill have to use something that only works for dialup.

I use Netmeter as well. Uses about 5MB Working set and 33 MB virtual size. And less than 1% CPU.

I am another NetMeter user. I love the Current/Projected tab in the Totals window.
