I love the Bulk Rename Utility!
« on: October 08, 2005, 10:40:20 PM »
Thanks to a recommendation from a fellow member kfitting, I found the excellent Bulk Rename Utility, written by Jim Willsher, who also has a fine PHP newsletter app. It's fast, easy, uncomplicated, and everything is right in front of you.

bulkrename2.gif

From the Help file. Bulk Rename Utility supports flexible renaming criteria, including:
· Select files and/or folders
· Files and/or Folders
· Full support for Perl-5 Regular Expressions
· Change the file name, or use a fixed filename
· Convert the extension to lower case, upper case, title case; replace it; add a secondary extension; remove it; or leave it alone!
· Replace text with other text
· Add a fixed prefix
· Add a fixed suffix
· Add text to the middle of a name
· Remove the first n characters
· Remove the last n characters
· Remove from the nth character to the nth character
· Remove a list of characters
· Remove all digits, characters or symbols
· Remove double-spaces
· Crop text before or after a fixed character or string
· Change to lower case
· Change to title case
· Auto-number files, with a prefix or suffix, and with a predefined minimum-length if required.
· Prefix or suffix the filename with various dates (date-modified, accessed, created, or today's date), in many different formats with variable separators
· Append the folder name to the file
· Store your frequently-used criteria as Favourites
· Copy or move the renamed files to a new location
· Set or clear attributes on the files (not folders)
· Rename files according to a delimited list.

All of these changes automatically ignore the filename extension, as it's usually dangerous to change the extension for a file. However, you can change the extension case to a fixed extension, and you can also remove an extension. You can choose to ignore extensions within folder names (but not filenames). The application supports Favourites, which allows quick access to frequently-used rename configurations. Directory recursion is also fully supported, allowing you to process directories and sub-directories.

This application is continually being enhanced. If you like the application, but have some suggestions for enhancements or improvements, then please get in touch. If you don't like the application then please tell me what you don't like! I would add some more functionality (e.g. allow conversion of double-spaces to single-spaces, allow removal of leading spaces) etc., but I'm struggling to find the room on the screen! If anyone has any bright ideas....

Bulk Rename Utility is donationware and well worth it. Thanks kfitting!

wonderful, you've convinced me to try it!

my experience with renamers is that it pays to have several, and then use the one that makes it easiest to do the current job you have in mind.  sometimes one renamer makes it easier than another for a given task.

I, too, love Bulk Rename Utility. I've been using it for about two years - settled on it after having trialed a number of other Renaming apps and purchasing one of them. BRU is easily the best of the bunch.

I used to have three different renaming utilities installed so that all contingencies were covered. I no longer find this necessary with BRU installed - it's met all of my needs thus far. Of course, other people's mileage may vary...

As Zaine's post implies - Jim is very, very approachable.

I've tried this utility and it is very good...but it's not the best I have found.

Flash Renamer, hands down, it the best I've ever found...and I've tried many. Flash Renamer is the only one I need, all others have since been deleted. I found it when searching for a renamer that I could call from the context menu.

the freeware author of the 1-4a software seems like a great guy.  the 1-4a rename page is fun and lighthearted.  check out the "negative comments" page linked at bottom ;)

I downloaded a couple wallpaper websites (thank you offline explorer!) and decided it would be fun to play around with these 2 other renamers. I wasn't crazy about 1-4a Rename as it's lack of smooth scrolling made it very difficult to  sort through the list and it was missing certain features that I'm used to.

Rename Master, however, has a lot of potential. I love the fact that you can select options on one tab and move to another and set more without resetting the previous. The preview window is very cool too. I did notice that is was very buggy when it came to hilighting individual files using Ctrl-click and looping multiple files in a row was also giveing me odd results as certain hilighted file would "un-select"...bizarre....I will be keeping an eye on this one though.

I love these forums, I keep finding some really cool software that even Google can't seem to find.

I agree, although I am finding that the people I am meeting through the forum are even better. Lots of help, kindness and pleasant posts. This site is definately a big winner.
I have an excellent memory.....now what was I saying ???

Hi Zaine,

Do you mind if I nab your first post in this thread for an upcoming newsletter article? I'll give full credit and a link to DonationCoder as usual.

Hey clif, you're always welcome to do so! Also, I've had Flash Renamer on my desktop for years and it's been quite handy, so I can't say anything bad about it.

I have been using this utility for about 6 months and would say that it is MUSTARD .

The times that I used is to rename a large number of photographs.

I have used other rename utilities (cannot remember the names as they were not up to scratch), and this one beats others hands down.

  :up:TOTALLY RECOMMENDED.

My all-time personal favorite bulk renamer is Oscar's File Renamer.  The beauty of Oscar's is that instead of the traditional set up search/replace criteria limited by the power of the program itself, Oscar lists the files in a plain text with each file/folder on its own line.  You edit it like a normal text file, when you save your changes the new file names are applied to the old (The old file names/file info are displayed in a little pane on the left in case you forget what file you're playing with)

From here, Oscar natively supports case conversions, macros (handy if you're doing the same thing over and over, line for line), basic find replace and incrementing.  Not much, right -- but here's the real beauty of it -- you can copy and paste the file list into your favorite text editor, which is no doubt more powerful, and perform all the transformations/replacements you want on the files all in the comfort of your editor of choice.  When you're done, paste it back in to Oscar, save it, and vuala.

After using Oscar, I couldn't go back to the other query based method of file renaming -- this is just too comfortable. ;)

ah you found a renamer that lets you edit file lilst with text editor!!

we were wondering if such a thing existed at some point (maybe on coding snacks section?)...

that's a great find and could really come in handy in some tricky cases.  downloading..

I'm almost positive there's at least one other . . . seems like there were a few at the freeware/shareware listing I'd found Oscar's at, but I didn't actually try them and have since forgotten where/how I found it.  Seems like Oscar's isn't the only text editor renamer, though.

hamradio, I have always loved Flexible Renamer since v.7.3, and that's over three years ago, but it has long been abandoned — at least it hasn't been touched since 2003. For renaming files, no other app is faster than Flexible Renamer imo, but Bulk Rename Utility is the killer app in this category.

As always, if you use it, show the author some love and throw money at him. His PayPal donation page list various donation levels, which is neat, too.
